Richard wrote codicil six weeks before death.
Witnessed by Gabriel and Helena.
Neither read final beneficiary appendix because Richard placed it directly inside sealed envelope.
Was that legal?
Yes, because core trust instrument referenced sealed beneficiary schedule held by trustee.
Risky but valid if authenticated.
Why such secrecy?
Richard said:
“The person named there must never know until review proves they deserve protection.”
Person.
Not necessarily Sophie.
Could be Emma.
Ethan.
Julian.
Someone else.
Then handwriting expert authenticated envelope exterior.
Richard’s wax seal genuine.
R-8 notation added by Helena according to Rose’s old protocol.
No forgery.
Inside, at least one authentic document.
But still unopened because legal order required all co-trustees and child guardian present after emergency event.
Court hearing scheduled.
Eleanor begged Ethan privately.
“Don’t open it.”
“Why?”
“If Richard named Sophie, everything changes.”
“You nearly killed her over something you hadn’t even read.”
Eleanor broke down.
“I thought I was saving family.”
“From an infant?”
“I thought once trust moved, Julian would return and destroy company.”
There it was.
Her real fear.
Not money for herself.
Collapse.
If control shifted and Julian exposed patent dispute, Carter Biologics could face lawsuits, investor panic, lost jobs.
Eleanor convinced herself Sophie’s survival would trigger chain reaction.
Mara’s fake summaries fed that belief.
Eleanor chose institution over child.
No excuse.
But motive was broader than greed.
Then Ethan learned Richard had been investigating patent dispute before death.
He believed Julian’s mother Laura deserved compensation.
He also believed Carter Biologics had later developed independent improvements, meaning company itself should not be destroyed.
He sought settlement.
Codicil may have been solution.
Then Julian revealed another secret.
He returned not to destroy Carter Biologics.
He wanted truth and independent review.
“I have no interest in owning your family company.”
“Then what do you want?”
“My mother’s name restored to patent history.”
“And money?”
“If audit proves she was cheated, restitution should follow.”
Reasonable.
So Eleanor had built catastrophe in mind where none may have existed.
Then Sable Foundation mystery deepened.
$900,000 from Julian trust to Sable Foundation was not missing.
It funded legal research protecting Laura Reed’s intellectual-property claim.
Eleanor had secretly preserved evidence she publicly pretended did not exist.
Why?
Julian stared.
“She helped me?”
Helena said:
“She helped your case while hiding you.”
Eleanor was not consistent villain.
She protected Julian.
Protected company.
Protected herself.
Then nearly destroyed Sophie.
Human contradictions.
Then Gabriel received sealed court archive.
Richard had written note one month before death:
IF ELEANOR EVER BELIEVES SOPHIE IS THE BENEFICIARY, SOMEONE HAS LIED TO HER.
Emma froze.
Richard had predicted exactly scenario.
How?
Maybe he knew Mara?
No.
Mara was uninvolved then.
Then next line:
THE YOUNGEST CHILD IS ONLY THE CLOCK.
NOT THE HEIR.
So Sophie did not inherit Northbridge control.
Then who did?
Richard wrote:
THE HEIR WILL BE THE PERSON WHO HAS ALREADY GIVEN UP THEIR CLAIM.
Ethan looked at Emma.
Julian looked at Helena.
