Chapter 7 - Julian Reed

Julian Reed had grown up quietly under another surname.
Not Carter.
Not hidden heir.
A protected trust beneficiary whose mother helped Northbridge.
At seventeen he discovered mother’s old patent notebooks suggested Northbridge’s breakthrough cardiac sensor had incorporated research from small lab without proper licensing.
If true, Carter Biologics merger valuation had been inflated.
Julian threatened to disclose.
Richard Carter allegedly pressured him to wait until legal review.
Julian thought Richard wanted silence.
Then threats appeared.
Someone followed him.
His apartment searched.
Eleanor arranged relocation.
Why falsify incapacity rather than legal relocation?
Because trust documents would otherwise notify multiple Carter trustees, including Richard.
Eleanor did not trust husband.
That was her version.
Richard died believing Julian disabled?
Gabriel said yes.
Helena said maybe not.
Then Ethan found letter from Richard:
ELEANOR THINKS I DON’T KNOW WHERE J.R. WENT.
LET HER BELIEVE THAT.
Richard had known.
So spouses were both hiding knowledge from each other.
Why?
To protect Julian from third person.
Who?
Unclear.
Then anonymous account sent Emma video.
A man around thirty-eight.
Dark hair.
No name.
He said:
“If Sophie is alive, review proceeds.”
Emma’s pulse jumped.
“Julian?”
Man continued:
“If Eleanor opens envelope before review witnesses arrive, burn contents.”
Then video ended.
Helena confirmed face.
Julian Reed.
Alive.
He had returned.
But why send threats telling Eleanor she’d lose everything?
Maybe revenge.
Julian later called Ethan directly.
“I never told her to hurt Sophie.”
“Did you send messages?”
“Some.”
“Which?”
“Northbridge shares. R-8. Seven days.”
“Did you say ‘when child survives ceremony, you lose everything’?”
“No.”
Someone piggybacked his campaign.
Julian admitted he wanted scare Eleanor into revealing what she did.
He believed she stole trust.
But when Ethan told him Eleanor claimed she protected him, Julian laughed.
“She protected herself.”
“How?”
“Ask where my distributions went from 2003 to 2011.”
Records showed significant sums.
Education.
Housing.
Medical.
But also $3.6 million categorized:
SECURITY PRESERVATION.
Recipients sealed.
Julian claimed he never received it.
Who did?
Eleanor.
Or someone through her.
That could be theft.
Then forensic accountant followed money.
Not to Eleanor personally.
To private security company Vale Protective Services.
Owned by Gabriel Vale’s late brother.
Gabriel looked shocked.
“I didn’t know.”
Payments funded surveillance, safe houses, legal defense.
For Julian.
He had benefited indirectly.
Again apparent theft became protective expenditure.
But one payment remained unexplained.
$900,000 to:
SABLE FOUNDATION.
No public records.
Eleanor refused answer.
Julian said:
“That’s why I came back.”
Sable Foundation held original Northbridge patent notebooks.
Or so he believed.
Then Emma asked:
“What does any of this have to do with Sophie?”
Julian answered:
“Nothing.”
That frightened her more.
If Julian’s dispute did not require Sophie’s death—
someone else had deliberately turned infant into target.
Then police traced most violent anonymous message.
Not from Julian.
Not Helena.
Not Eleanor.
It came from device registered to Carter mansion guest network.
Sent while Eleanor was upstairs.
Who else was in house?
Twenty-seven guests.
One of them had been manipulating everyone in real time.
May you like
And guest list showed one name Emma had never heard before:
MARA SABLE.
