Chapter 4 - Helena’s Real Role
Helena Carter had been introduced to everyone as Richard’s younger sister.
Technically, she was his half-sister by adoption.
Rose Carter adopted Helena at age nine after death of close friend.
Helena never held Carter operating shares.
Instead, Rose trained her as independent family fiduciary.
That explained why Helena disappeared from social life.
She had not fled family.
She became protector of trust structure.
Why hide that?
Because Carter family considered trustees less glamorous than owners.
But more powerful.
Helena could block certain transfers.
Remove conflicted advisers.
Trigger reviews.
She lived in Switzerland managing old family foundation investments.
Or so Gabriel believed.
Had she returned?
Post-office footage suggested yes.
Then Emma received second package.
No envelope.
A photocopy.
Old photograph of Richard Carter holding newborn baby.
Not Ethan.
Date:
Ethan had been born 1990.
Who was baby?
On back:
RESERVE LINE BEGINS HERE.
Emma showed Ethan.
He stared.
“Who is that?”
Gabriel refused guessing.
Eleanor, through attorney, denied knowledge.
Helena could not be reached.
Then Carter Biologics board counsel contacted Ethan.
Someone had recently submitted notice invoking “reserve fiduciary review.”
That action temporarily froze a proposed sale of company’s diagnostic division.
Who submitted?
Carter Continuity Trust.
Three days before envelope arrived.
So trust was active already.
Sophie’s survival was not required to activate it.
That undermined Eleanor’s belief.
Maybe Sophie was not beneficiary.
Maybe Eleanor had been manipulated into thinking she was.
Emma asked:
“Who wanted Eleanor to believe Sophie inherited something?”
That became new question.
Because anonymous photos Eleanor received were real.
They showed Richard signing trust.
One caption:
THE BABY WILL TAKE YOUR PLACE.
But handwriting was not Richard’s.
Someone sent propaganda.
Someone wanted Eleanor afraid.
Enough to act irrationally.
Could someone have engineered attempted harm?
Eleanor remained responsible.
But maybe she had been pushed.
Then police searched Eleanor’s phone.
Anonymous messages:
YOU HAVE SEVEN DAYS.
WHEN CHILD SURVIVES THE CEREMONY, YOU LOSE EVERYTHING.
Another:
R-8 RETURNS.
Emma stared.
“Ceremony?”
That night’s mansion gathering had been family foundation anniversary.
Sophie had no ceremony scheduled.
Unless envelope delivery was ceremony.
Then one final text:
THE BALCONY IS WHERE ROSE TESTED RICHARD.
Ethan looked upward toward same railing.
“What does that mean?”
Gabriel seemed shaken.
Rose had once subjected Richard to terrifying loyalty test at age seventeen.
Not physical fall.
A symbolic test.
She placed signed share-transfer documents on balcony ledge and told him choose:
save family control or protect employee whistleblower who threatened business.
Richard chose whistleblower.
Rose disinherited him temporarily.
Years later reinstated.
The balcony had become family myth.
Someone was recreating Rose’s language.
Then Helena finally called Ethan.
Her voice was calm.
“Your mother has been baited.”
“By who?”
“That’s what I’m trying to determine.”
“Did you send envelope?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Sophie needed to be alive when seal reached house.”
Emma’s blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Helena answered:
May you like
“Because envelope was never for Sophie.”
Then line disconnected.
