Chapter 9 - Ash Harbor

We did not bring Sophie.

That was the first decision.

The second was harder.

We brought Grace.

Not because I distrusted her.

Because Alexander specifically hadn't asked for her.

That made her useful.

Evelyn remained with Sophie and Amara beneath protection from people Marcus selected personally.

Nobody from my existing organization.

I no longer knew which uniforms belonged to me.

Ash Harbor appeared through morning fog.

One mansion.

One dock.

No visible guards.

Marcus hated it.

“So do I,” I said.

Grace looked across the water.

“My mother brought me here when I was little.”

“You remember?”

“Pieces.”

A swing.

A red door.

A man teaching her chess.

Alexander?

We entered.

My father waited in the dining room.

Fourteen years older than the last time I saw him.

Same posture.

Same eyes.

I had imagined his ghost for years.

The reality was disappointing.

“Son.”

“Don't.”

He nodded.

Fair.

“Where's Elena?”

“Safe.”

“Everyone in this family uses that word before explaining something unforgivable.”

Grace glanced at me.

Alexander almost smiled.

“You've changed.”

“You missed fourteen years.”

“I watched.”

That made my blood cold.

He knew about my marriage.

Sophie.

My businesses.

Everything.

“Why fake your death?”

“To fight Victor.”

“Victor is your brother.”

“He stopped being my brother when he turned Evelyn's escape network into a market.”

Alexander claimed he spent years dismantling Victor's network quietly.

But if he revealed himself, Victor would expose Hale operations and trigger a war.

“So you sacrificed people to protect the empire.”

“Yes.”

At least he admitted it.

“Where is Elena?”

Alexander pressed a button.

A door opened.

Elena entered.

Alive.

I forgot how to breathe.

She looked older.

Thinner.

Beautiful.

Terrified.

“Julian.”

Two years collapsed.

I crossed the room.

Then stopped.

She did too.

There were too many lies between us for an embrace to cross easily.

“Sophie is alive,” I said.

“I know.”

“She thinks you're coming back.”

“I was.”

“Why didn't you?”

Alexander answered.

“Because she discovered something.”

Elena looked at him furiously.

“Let me tell him.”

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were financial records proving Victor's network still operated.

But Victor wasn't its leader.

Alexander wasn't either.

Someone else had controlled it for twenty years.

Someone using the name Shepherd.

“Who?”

Elena looked at Grace.

“We don't know.”

Grace stiffened.

“Why are you looking at me?”

“Because Shepherd has been paying for Amara since before she was born.”

Silence.

Grace shook her head.

“Paying what?”

Medical bills.

Daycare.

Rent shortfalls.

Anonymous deposits.

Someone had quietly protected Amara.

Then Elena showed us a DNA report.

Grace read it.

Her face changed.

“What is this?”

“Your mother asked me to run it.”

Amara's biological father wasn't the man Grace believed.

Grace had dated Daniel Cross briefly.

He disappeared before learning she was pregnant.

But DNA databases showed Amara's paternal line connected directly to—

Alexander Hale.

I stared at my father.

Grace stared too.

“No.”

Alexander looked genuinely confused.

Then Elena clarified.

“Not Alexander.”

She turned the page.

“Victor.”

Grace staggered backward.

Victor Hale was Amara's grandfather.

Meaning Grace's missing boyfriend, Daniel Cross, was Victor's secret son.

Grace's mother Evelyn had unknowingly raised a daughter who later had a child with the son of the man she hated most.

Or maybe not unknowingly.

Our families had folded in on themselves until every secret touched another.

Then Marcus entered.

“Boat approaching.”

Alexander checked the security feed.

His face changed.

Victor Hale stood on the deck.

Beside him was Daniel Cross.

Alive.

Grace whispered:

“Daniel?”

The man she believed had abandoned her stepped onto the dock.

And in his arms—

was Amara.

May you like

Grace screamed.

Because the safe house had already been breached.
