Chapter 12 - Evelyn's War

Grace refused to believe it.

Then Vincent showed us the evidence.

Evelyn had helped create the original rescue network.

For years, she moved victims away from dangerous families.

Then she watched some of them return.

Some went back to abusers.

Some testified and were killed.

Some exposed the network.

Evelyn changed.

Protection became control.

She decided rescued people couldn't be trusted with their own choices.

She began assigning identities permanently.

Separating families she considered dangerous.

Erasing memories when necessary.

Grace was not collateral damage.

Grace was her first experiment.

“You're lying,” Grace whispered.

Vincent didn't argue.

He played footage.

Evelyn administering medication to Grace.

Not once.

Years.

Then another recording.

Evelyn speaking to Elena.

“Julian loves Sophie. That's precisely why he cannot keep her.”

Elena answered:

“You don't decide that.”

“I decide who survives.”

That was the split.

Elena stopped being Shepherd.

Evelyn took control of part of the network.

Then forged Elena's orders.

She manipulated Marcus.

Used Cole.

Moved Sophie.

Drugged Grace.

And planted Amara inside my life through her mother.

The dinner had not been random.

Not entirely.

Grace had genuinely brought Amara because her sitter canceled.

But Evelyn had arranged for the sitter to cancel.

One small push.

Then she trusted a three-year-old to behave like a three-year-old.

I felt strangely relieved.

Amara's question had still been hers.

“May I eat with you?”

Nobody had scripted that.

Then Grace's phone rang.

Evelyn.

Grace answered.

“Mom?”

“Bring Amara home.”

“No.”

Silence.

“Grace.”

“You drugged me.”

“To protect you.”

“You stole pieces of my life.”

“To save your life.”

“You made Sophie afraid of me.”

“I made Sophie afraid of everyone dangerous.”

Grace looked at me.

“Including Julian?”

“Especially Julian.”

I expected anger.

Instead, I understood.

Evelyn had seen what I was.

She had simply refused to believe I could become something else.

Grace asked:

“Where are you?”

“Finishing what I started.”

The call ended.

Marcus traced it.

My mansion.

I stared at the screen.

Evelyn had returned to my house.

Why?

We arrived twenty minutes later.

The dining room lights were on.

Twenty places had been set.

For the first time in years.

Evelyn sat in Sophie's old chair.

The empty chair.

My chair beside it remained untouched.

She looked at me.

“Sit down, Julian.”

I almost smiled.

“You've got nerve.”

“So did Amara.”

Grace stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Evelyn's expression softened.

“I'm sorry.”

“No, you're not.”

That hurt her.

Good.

Then Sophie entered behind us with Elena.

Evelyn looked at her.

For the first time, fear appeared.

“Sophie shouldn't be here.”

Sophie stared at Evelyn.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You said Daddy didn't want me.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I was wrong.”

That admission surprised everyone.

Then she placed a black ledger on the table.

“I came to give Julian the names.”

“What names?”

“Every person who purchased access to Victor's corrupted routes.”

Victor went pale.

Hundreds of powerful people.

Judges.

Executives.

Politicians.

Criminals.

I reached for it.

Evelyn stopped me.

“One condition.”

“No.”

“You haven't heard it.”

“Still no.”

She almost smiled.

Then the mansion windows exploded inward.

Guards shouted.

Lights died.

Gunfire erupted outside.

I dragged Sophie and Amara beneath the table.

Elena covered them.

Grace grabbed Evelyn.

Marcus shouted into his radio.

Someone had attacked the mansion.

Not for me.

For the ledger.

Then a masked man entered the dining room.

He aimed directly at Evelyn.

She looked at him.

And whispered one name.

“Daniel.”

May you like

Grace froze.

Because Daniel Cross, Amara's father, was supposed to be standing with Victor at St. Gabriel's.
