Chapter 14 - The Father I Never Had

DNA answered the question before sunrise.

Alexander Hale had raised me.

He was not my biological father.

His identical brother was.

The unnamed third son.

Nathaniel Hale.

The man erased before anyone knew he existed.

Nathaniel had spent decades becoming other people.

Using Alexander's credentials.

Victor's networks.

Vincent's technology.

Elena's voice system.

Evelyn's fear.

He didn't build the conspiracy.

He learned how to live inside everyone else's.

My mother had known.

She took the truth to her grave.

A real grave, apparently.

I almost appreciated the simplicity.

Nathaniel contacted us again.

One location.

The old Hale Maritime terminal.

Come alone.

Nobody obeyed that part.

We arrived with enough security to start a small war.

The terminal appeared empty.

Inside, one dining table stood beneath industrial lights.

Twenty chairs.

Mockery.

Nathaniel sat at the head.

He looked like Alexander after reconstructive surgery had done its work.

Not identical anymore.

Close enough.

I approached.

“So you're my father.”

“Does that matter?”

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

Good.

“Why Sophie?”

“She saw me.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Sophie had wandered into my office during a family party and seen Nathaniel meeting Cole.

She thought he was Grandpa.

Then Alexander arrived.

Two grandfathers.

She told Elena.

Elena investigated.

Nathaniel arranged the attack.

Not to kill Sophie.

To erase what she knew.

Elena escaped with her.

Victor exploited the situation.

Evelyn manipulated it.

Marcus infiltrated it.

Everyone built another lie on top of Nathaniel's first one.

“Why not kill me?”

Nathaniel studied me.

“Because I needed you.”

“For what?”

“The Hale empire recognizes you.”

Biometric systems.

Financial structures.

Private networks.

Legitimate boards.

Criminal alliances.

Nathaniel could impersonate Alexander.

He couldn't impersonate me.

He needed my authority to merge the rescue network, Victor's criminal routes, and Hale Maritime into one structure.

“That's your grand plan?”

“To own everything?”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“To burn it.”

That surprised me.

Nathaniel believed the Hale empire was irredeemable.

He wanted every ledger released.

Every corrupt client exposed.

Every company collapsed.

Every family destroyed.

Including ours.

For one second, I almost respected the goal.

Then I remembered the people he had hurt to reach it.

“You don't burn a corrupt house by locking children inside.”

Nathaniel's smile vanished.

Behind me came small footsteps.

I turned.

“No.”

Sophie.

Amara.

Grace.

Elena.

They had followed.

I was furious.

Then I understood why.

Sophie held Evelyn's black ledger.

Nathaniel stood.

“There it is.”

Sophie hugged it.

“No.”

He stared at her.

My daughter stared back.

She had spent two years surrounded by adults who thought fear made them powerful.

She was done being afraid.

Nathaniel moved.

I stepped between them.

“So did Alexander.”

My father—not by blood, but by every definition that suddenly mattered.

Victor moved beside him.

Then Vincent emerged from the shadows.

Alive.

Injured.

Marcus beside him.

Three brothers.

One counterfeit brother.

One son.

One granddaughter holding the truth.

Nathaniel laughed.

“Look at you.”

He looked at me.

“Still pretending these people are family?”

I answered:

“They're whatever they choose to be next.”

For once, nobody argued.

Then Nathaniel reached inside his coat.

Every weapon in the room rose.

He stopped.

Slowly removed—

a red remote.

My stomach dropped.

Explosives.

Throughout the terminal.

Nathaniel smiled.

“You wanted the truth, Julian.”

His thumb hovered over the button.

“Let's see what it's worth when everyone you love is standing inside the same building.”

Then Amara stepped around Grace.

Tiny.

Fearless.

She looked at Nathaniel.

“Mister?”

Everyone froze.

Nathaniel stared.

Amara pointed at the empty chair beside him.

“Are you lonely too?”

His expression changed.

Just for one second.

But one second was enough.

Sophie threw the ledger toward Marcus.

May you like

I lunged.

Nathaniel pressed the red button.
