Chapter 9 - My Father’s Deal

Frank admitted meeting Reeves.
He claimed it was a trap.
Nobody believed him immediately.
Rachel least of all.
“You let Mom sell information.”
“Yes.”
“You helped me forget Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“And now you’re meeting the man who took him.”
Frank looked exhausted.
“Because I wanted him to think I’d finally turned.”
“For what?”
“To find Eleanor.”
Caleb stiffened.
Eleanor had disappeared after giving him the key.
Frank claimed Reeves knew where she was.
“So you traded something.”
Rachel’s father was silent.
“What?”
“My cooperation.”
“With what?”
“Convincing Daniel to complete the dinner.”
Rachel felt cold.
Frank had been another pressure point.
He had told Daniel that recovering Rachel’s memory might save Caleb.
Daniel thought he was making one impossible decision.
In reality, several people had separately pushed him toward the same act.
Not mind control.
Manipulation through fear.
Daniel still chose.
But the web was larger.
Rachel looked at her father.
“You used me.”
“I was trying to find Eleanor.”
“You used Noah too.”
“I never thought he would eat the food.”
Again.
The exact same sentence.
Rachel laughed without humor.
Every adult had a version of it.
I never meant.
I never expected.
I thought.
Then Marcus interrupted.
Eleanor had been found.
Alive.
She had checked herself into a hospice facility under an alias.
Cancer.
Late stage.
Caleb wanted to see her.
Rachel didn’t know whether to stop him.
Then realized it wasn’t her choice.
“You decide.”
Caleb went.
Rachel went too, but stayed outside until he invited her in.
Eleanor looked frail.
Smaller than the monster Rachel had imagined.
That did not make her innocent.
Caleb sat beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me my mother was alive?”
Eleanor cried.
“Because I thought losing me would destroy you.”
“You mean losing control of me.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
He asked:
“Did Reeves tell you to keep me?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
“I chose it.”
“Why?”
“Because I loved you.”
Caleb’s face twisted.
“You loved me and still let me believe she abandoned me.”
Eleanor sobbed.
“Yes.”
That contradiction hurt more than simple evil.
People could love and still destroy.
Then Eleanor asked Rachel to come closer.
“I know where Reeves is going.”
“Where?”
“Bellweather.”
The original corporate headquarters.
Demolition scheduled in forty-eight hours.
He planned to destroy the last physical archive beneath the building.
“Why now?”
“Because the acquisition closes Monday.”
Rachel stared.
“And the ledger?”
“He still doesn’t have it.”
“Where is Daniel’s half?”
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“Ask Daniel why Noah’s middle name is James.”
Rachel froze.
Noah James Carter.
Daniel chose the middle name.
He said it belonged to an uncle.
He had no Uncle James.
Rachel stared.
Eleanor whispered:
“James wasn’t a person.”
May you like
“What was it?”
“A place.”
