Chapter 13 - What Rachel Chose

Rachel stopped chasing memories for two days.
That decision shocked everyone.
Detectives wanted details.
Evelyn wanted to continue treatment.
Daniel wanted answers.
Caleb wanted Reeves found.
Rachel said no.
Not forever.
For two days.
She went home with Noah under police protection.
Daniel stayed elsewhere.
Caleb was offered a room.
He declined.
“I’m not ready.”
Rachel respected it.
They had breakfast together instead.
No dramatic mother-son reconciliation.
Pancakes.
Awkward silence.
Noah asked Caleb whether he played basketball.
Caleb said badly.
Noah laughed.
Rachel nearly cried.
Ordinary things mattered.
Then Daniel asked to see Rachel.
She agreed in a public park.
“You don’t have to forgive me.”
“I know.”
“I’m turning over everything.”
“Good.”
“I’ve requested reassignment pending investigation.”
“That’s probably wise.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I love you.”
Rachel’s throat tightened.
“I know.”
“That doesn’t fix it.”
“No.”
“I don’t know whether we stay married.”
Daniel nodded.
“That should be your choice.”
“Our choice, eventually.”
He almost smiled.
“Right.”
Then he handed her his wedding ring.
Rachel stared.
“I’m not giving this back to punish you.”
“What are you doing?”
“Giving you control of what happens next.”
She closed his hand around it.
“No.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m not deciding today.”
For the first time in weeks, uncertainty didn’t frighten Rachel.
It belonged to her.
Then Marcus called.
Reeves had surfaced.
At Bellweather’s abandoned headquarters.
He demanded one person meet him.
Rachel.
She refused.
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Good.”
No reckless private confrontation.
Instead, investigators opened communication remotely.
Rachel spoke from a secure command vehicle.
“What do you want?”
Reeves’s voice came through.
“To tell you what happened at the bridge.”
“I already remember enough.”
“No.”
“You need me to need the rest.”
Silence.
Rachel continued:
“That’s how all of you keep power.”
“You think this is about power?”
“Yes.”
Reeves laughed.
Then:
“Ask Caleb what he found in Eleanor’s house.”
Rachel looked at Caleb.
His face changed.
“What?”
Caleb removed something from his backpack.
A small digital recorder.
“I didn’t know if it was real.”
On it was a conversation recorded eight years earlier.
Eleanor and Reeves.
Reeves:
“Caleb can never learn why Rebecca was targeted.”
Eleanor:
“He already asks about his father.”
Rachel froze.
Father.
She had assumed Caleb’s paternity was irrelevant.
Then Eleanor said:
“Rebecca still thinks Thomas is the father.”
Rachel looked at Caleb.
Thomas?
Her former fiancé?
The recording continued.
Reeves:
“Thomas isn’t.”
Eleanor:
“Then who is?”
A pause.
Reeves:
“Me.”
The command vehicle went silent.
Caleb stared at the speaker.
Rachel stared at Reeves’s live audio channel.
