Chapter 6 - Colonel Reeves

Daniel refused to believe it.

That lasted twelve minutes.

Then financial records arrived.

Reeves had received payments routed through Bellweather subsidiaries during the original investigation.

Not enormous sums.

Enough to explain why certain raids always arrived late.

Why witnesses disappeared.

Why Rebecca’s warehouse location was exposed.

Daniel stared at the documents.

“He sent me there.”

“To protect Rebecca?”

Daniel shook his head.

“To move her.”

Rachel felt cold.

“Where?”

“A secondary safe house.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Rebecca refused.”

Something stirred.

Not a memory.

A sensation.

Rachel suddenly smelled smoke.

Felt concrete under her palms.

Heard Daniel shouting.

A flash disappeared immediately.

She gripped the chair.

Daniel stood but didn’t approach.

“Rachel?”

“I’m fine.”

Nobody told her what she “must” remember.

That mattered.

Marcus explained Reeves’s likely role.

He sold Bellweather information.

But when deaths escalated, he panicked.

He tried playing both sides.

Rebecca discovered the payments.

She copied the ledger.

Reeves needed it gone.

Bellweather needed Rebecca gone.

Then the fire.

Rachel whispered:

“Did Reeves start it?”

Unknown.

Daniel asked the next question.

“Why is he with Eleanor now?”

Because fourteen years later, Bellweather’s surviving stakeholders were selling the company.

A massive acquisition.

Old liabilities could resurface during due diligence.

The ledger could destroy the sale.

Everyone who once thought the past was buried suddenly needed certainty.

Then Noah asked to speak to Rachel.

He looked better.

Still pale.

Still frightened.

“Mom, I remembered something.”

“What?”

“The night before dinner.”

Noah heard Daniel arguing on the phone.

Not with Caleb.

With Reeves.

“Dad called him Colonel.”

Rachel looked toward Daniel.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had not disclosed that.

“Why?”

Daniel finally admitted he called Reeves after receiving the threats.

He still trusted him.

Reeves advised him to work with Evelyn.

To trigger Rachel’s memory.

“You brought the mole into this yourself.”

“I didn’t know.”

“But you hid the call from me.”

“Yes.”

Noah continued.

“Grandpa Reeves said something weird.”

“He’s not your grandfather.”

Noah shrugged nervously.

“That’s what Dad calls him sometimes.”

Rachel looked sharply at Daniel.

Reeves had become a father figure after Daniel’s own father died.

Noah said:

“He told Dad, ‘If she remembers the bridge, everything changes.’”

Bridge.

Rachel froze.

Something inside her reacted.

A river.

Night.

Headlights.

A screaming child.

Caleb?

She pressed both hands against her temples.

No forcing.

No chasing.

Marcus noticed.

“What bridge?”

Rachel whispered:

“I don’t know.”

Then Evelyn entered carrying an old map.

“There was a bridge three miles from Bellweather’s warehouse.”

Rachel looked.

Potomac tributary.

Service road.

Evelyn pointed.

“The night of the fire, Rebecca’s car was found here.”

Rachel stared at the location.

Then memory came harder.

She was running.

Caleb crying.

A man shouting.

Daniel behind her.

Someone standing beside a black SUV.

Rachel whispered:

“Reeves.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What?”

“He wasn’t at the warehouse.”

Rachel’s breathing accelerated.

“He was at the bridge.”

Then she remembered one sentence.

Reeves’s voice:

“Give me the boy, Rebecca.”

May you like

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“He took Caleb.”
