Chapter 7 - The Accident

Daniel died when a steel support collapsed at a commercial construction site.
Official investigation:
equipment failure.
No criminal finding.
I had spent two years learning how to breathe around that fact.
Now police reopened everything.
Helen denied involvement.
Vanessa denied involvement.
Dad said he never saw the photograph until after Daniel’s funeral.
The construction company had changed ownership twice.
Records were incomplete.
Then investigators found the original maintenance supervisor.
He remembered something.
A safety lock had been manually disengaged.
Not accidentally.
Someone with site access knew exactly what to do.
Vanessa had visited Daniel that morning.
Security records confirmed it.
“Why?”
She claimed she wanted money.
Daniel had discovered Emma’s parentage.
He told Vanessa he intended to tell me everything.
She begged him not to.
“Did you threaten him?”
“No.”
“Did Helen?”
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
Helen had followed her.
Daniel told both women he would reveal the switch.
He also said he had already changed the trust.
That terrified Vanessa.
She thought she would lose Lily.
Not money.
Lily.
For all her cruelty toward Emma, Vanessa genuinely loved the girl she had raised.
That truth complicated nothing and everything.
People could love one child while harming another.
Love did not absolve them.
Vanessa claimed she left before the accident.
Helen stayed.
Mom denied it.
Then security footage surfaced from a nearby traffic camera.
Helen’s car remained outside the site forty-seven minutes after Vanessa drove away.
Daniel died thirty-one minutes into that period.
I confronted Mom.
“Were you there?”
“I went to talk to him.”
“Did you touch the equipment?”
“No.”
“Then why lie?”
“Because I knew what it looked like.”
“You’ve been lying for four years.”
She started crying.
“I didn’t kill Daniel.”
For once, I believed she might be telling the truth.
Not because she deserved trust.
Because another detail appeared.
A third vehicle entered the construction site.
Dad’s truck.
He had been there too.
George stared at the photograph when police showed him.
Then he confessed.
He went because Helen called him.
She was hysterical.
Daniel had threatened to expose everything.
Dad arrived to stop an argument.
He found Daniel alive.
Angry.
Packing papers.
Then Vanessa returned.
“What?”
Police checked.
A rear entrance camera caught her car circling back.
Vanessa had lied.
She returned fifteen minutes before the collapse.
Why?
She claimed Lily’s diaper bag was in Daniel’s office.
Nobody believed that.
Then investigators searched archived emergency calls.
At 10:42 that morning, Daniel called 911.
The connection lasted nine seconds.
Only one phrase was clear:
“She’s got the wrench.”
Female voice screaming behind him.
Then the line died.
Vanessa went pale when she heard it.
Helen covered her mouth.
Dad whispered:
“Oh God.”
But none of them recognized the female voice.
I did.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Helen.
It was me.
My own voice was on Daniel’s final emergency call.
Yet I had been forty miles away at work.
May you like
Or at least—
that was what I had believed.
