Chapter 2 - Lily Runs Down the Hall

Emma woke just after noon.

Her first word was:

“Mommy?”

I nearly collapsed with relief.

“I’m here.”

She tried touching her face, but the nurse gently moved her hand.

“Don’t rub there, sweetheart.”

Emma stared at the doorway.

“Is Grandma mad?”

The question hurt more than the doctor’s diagnosis.

“No.”

It was the simplest lie I had ever told.

Then she whispered:

“Aunt Vanessa said I wasn’t supposed to be at Lily’s place.”

“I know.”

“But Grandma said it first.”

I went still.

“When?”

“Before you went upstairs.”

“What did Grandma say?”

Emma frowned, trying to remember.

“That I should sit by you.”

That alone wasn’t strange.

Then she added:

“She said Lily’s chair isn’t for me.”

Before I could ask more, the hospital doors opened down the corridor.

Vanessa’s husband, Eric, had arrived with Lily.

Security stopped him.

But Lily saw me.

“Aunt Rachel!”

She pulled away from him and ran.

I caught her before a nurse could.

Her face was pale.

“Lily, sweetheart, are you okay?”

She looked over her shoulder at her father.

Then whispered:

“Mom didn’t decide to hurt Emma.”

My body turned cold.

“What do you mean?”

“Mom was crying last night.”

“Why?”

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Grandma told her Emma could never be allowed to—”

She stopped.

Her eyes widened.

I followed her gaze.

At the far end of the corridor stood Helen.

My mother had somehow gotten past the main lobby and was now walking toward us with Dad beside her.

Lily’s fingers tightened painfully around mine.

Helen saw her.

For the first time since this began, my mother looked frightened.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Frightened.

“Lily,” she said. “Come here.”

The child moved behind me.

“No.”

Helen’s face hardened.

“Your mother is looking for you.”

Lily whispered against my arm:

“She knows I heard.”

“Heard what?”

Helen took another step.

I moved between her and Lily.

“Stop.”

Mom looked at me.

“Rachel, you’re emotional.”

“My daughter is in pediatric trauma.”

“And Vanessa has a child too.”

That phrase again.

Vanessa has Lily to think about.

Dad had said the same thing.

“What did Lily hear last night?”

Mom didn’t answer.

Lily began trembling.

Then she whispered:

“Grandma said Emma isn’t really supposed to be yours.”

Everything inside me went silent.

“What?”

Helen snapped:

“She misunderstood.”

But Lily shook her head.

“No! You said Aunt Rachel was never supposed to find out who Emma really is.”

My mother’s face lost all color.

Dad closed his eyes.

And in that moment, I understood something far more frightening than Vanessa losing her temper.

My parents were not hearing this secret for the first time.

They were hearing it spoken aloud.
