Chapter 6 - Daniel’s Safe

Daniel had changed his estate documents eleven days before he died.

I never knew.

His attorney, Samuel Price, had retired and moved to Florida after Daniel’s accident.

Police reached him.

Samuel remembered everything.

Daniel came into his office terrified.

“He said he had discovered something about hospital records.”

My heart stopped.

So Daniel knew.

Not necessarily about the switch.

But enough to investigate.

He had found two inconsistent newborn identification numbers on an insurance statement.

Then discovered payments from Helen to a private laboratory.

He ordered DNA testing privately.

Results arrived three days before his death.

Daniel learned Emma was biologically his.

But not mine.

He also learned Lily was biologically ours.

He confronted nobody.

Instead, he changed the trust.

Why?

Because he feared Vanessa.

Samuel produced a sealed letter Daniel left for me.

It had never been delivered because Daniel instructed Samuel:

“Only if Rachel asks about the girls.”

I had never known to ask.

The letter arrived electronically that afternoon.

Rachel,

If I am wrong, burn this and hate me for being paranoid.

If I am right, your mother and Vanessa switched the babies.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel knew.

I kept reading.

I swear I never knew Vanessa was pregnant with my child until the DNA results. The night with her happened once, before either pregnancy was confirmed. I was ashamed and afraid to tell you. That cowardice belongs to me.

Tears blurred the page.

He had betrayed me.

But he had not participated in the switch.

Then:

Do not remove Emma from your heart because of biology. She is ours in every way that matters. Do not remove Lily from Vanessa suddenly either. Both girls will be hurt if adults turn them into property.

Daniel understood the exact danger everyone else ignored.

Children weren’t evidence.

They weren’t assets.

They weren’t bloodline corrections.

He instructed Samuel to create a new trust.

Equal beneficiaries:

Emma.

Lily.

No matter their biological parentage.

Neither Vanessa nor I could access principal funds before the girls turned twenty-five.

Independent trustee.

That should have ended Vanessa’s financial motive.

Except Samuel looked confused.

“The trust never activated.”

“Why?”

“Daniel died before signing the final document.”

My hope collapsed.

Then Samuel corrected himself.

“At least that’s what I believed.”

A week after Daniel died, Samuel received a signed copy by courier.

He assumed Daniel signed before the accident.

But recent forensic review showed the signature had been dated after Daniel’s death.

Forged.

By whom?

The witness signature belonged to George Carter.

My father.

Dad had forged Daniel’s signature.

But strangely, he forged it onto a document protecting both girls equally.

Why would someone participating in the cover-up create a safer trust?

Dad finally agreed to speak.

“I knew Helen would never stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Trying to fix the family.”

“So you forged Daniel’s name?”

“To protect the girls.”

“You committed fraud.”

“Yes.”

He didn’t excuse it.

That was almost worse.

“Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”

“I was afraid you’d lose both daughters at once.”

“You let me live a lie.”

“Yes.”

Then Dad revealed something Helen didn’t know.

Daniel had hidden a copy of his DNA reports inside a home safe.

Dad retrieved it after the funeral.

Alongside the reports was a photograph.

Vanessa meeting someone outside Daniel’s construction site the morning he died.

The person standing beside her was my mother.

And on the back Daniel had written:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, IT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT.
