Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Marriage

Emergency lights flooded the corridor red.

Julian stood thirty feet away.

He was not alone.

Two armed private-security contractors blocked the stairwell behind him.

Celeste stepped toward him.

“You knew.”

Julian smiled.

“I knew enough.”

“You married me because of Vale Meridian.”

“At first.”

The answer hurt precisely because it sounded almost sincere.

Julian claimed he had eventually loved Celeste.

But Nora had raised him to believe affection and opportunity were the same thing.

Rebecca shouted from the room.

“Don’t listen to him!”

Julian’s expression changed.

“Hello, Rebecca.”

Celeste moved in front of her mother.

Victor watched Julian carefully.

“You tried to kill me.”

Julian laughed.

“You still think this is about your money.”

Victor said nothing.

That bothered Julian.

“You always do that. You make silence look like power.”

Victor raised his injured hand.

“It worked on Celeste.”

Celeste flinched.

Julian smiled.

Then federal agents entered from the opposite corridor.

His contractors surrendered immediately.

Julian did not.

He reached inside his jacket.

Celeste recoiled.

But he pulled out a small encrypted drive and dropped it onto the floor.

“If I’m arrested, everything on this publishes automatically.”

Reed, his shoulder bandaged, stepped from behind the agents.

“What’s on it?”

Julian looked at Victor.

“The reason the federal government has protected Vale Meridian for thirty years.”

Victor’s expression finally changed.

He knew.

Vale Meridian had begun as a financial-security company, but its earliest fraud engine had evolved into something far more powerful: Atlas.

Atlas could map hidden ownership across shell corporations, trusts, charities, banks, and political networks.

Victor had shut it down after realizing how easily it could become a weapon.

Or so he thought.

Julian revealed that Atlas had never stopped running.

Someone inside Vale Meridian had maintained it secretly.

For decades.

Nora wanted control of it.

Victor wanted to know who had kept it alive.

Julian grinned.

“Ask your board.”

Reed arrested him.

As agents dragged Julian away, Celeste did not look at her husband.

She looked at Victor.

“You knew about Atlas?”

“I created the first version.”

“You built something that could watch everyone?”

“I destroyed it.”

Rebecca whispered:

“No, Victor.”

He turned.

She pointed toward the red ledger.

“Look at the payments from nineteen years ago.”

Victor opened the corresponding page.

Every payment to Rebecca had been authorized by one executive.

A man Victor trusted more than anyone.

His oldest friend.

Vale Meridian’s chairman.

Samuel Vale.

Victor’s younger brother.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Victor answered.

Samuel’s voice came through.

“Come home, brother.”

May you like

A pause.

“I’m sitting in your chair.”
