Chapter 14 - Sixty Seconds

Chaos erupted.

Reed ordered the building disconnected from every external network.

Technicians cut physical lines.

Atlas continued transmitting.

“Satellite relay,” Lena shouted.

Julian laughed.

“You taught everyone to look at the old people.”

Celeste stared at her husband.

“You played Thorne?”

“I played all of you.”

Julian had spent years pretending to serve his mother, Thorne, and Samuel while quietly copying Atlas.

His marriage to Celeste had begun as an assignment.

But greed had evolved beyond the assignment.

He no longer wanted access.

He wanted collapse.

If Atlas released everything indiscriminately, markets would panic. Companies would fall. Hidden assets would move.

Julian had already positioned shell companies to profit from the chaos.

Forty seconds.

Victor looked at Lena.

“Can you stop it?”

“No.”

“Can you change the destination?”

She stared at him.

Then understood.

“Maybe.”

Celeste moved beside her.

“I know the corporate routing architecture.”

Lena looked at her suspiciously.

“Because you stole through it?”

“Yes.”

“Useful skill.”

“First time anyone’s complimented me for it.”

Thirty seconds.

Together, they rerouted the release away from public servers and toward a sealed federal evidence repository.

Julian realized what they were doing.

He lunged from his chair.

A loose restraint slipped from his wrist.

He grabbed Celeste.

Victor moved instinctively, but his injured body failed him.

Lena slammed the emergency alarm.

Reed tackled Julian before he reached the server.

Ten seconds.

The system rejected the reroute.

Celeste stared at the authorization request.

“It needs Victor.”

Victor placed his injured hand against the biometric scanner.

ACCESS DENIED.

His fingers were too damaged.

Five seconds.

Celeste looked at the second scanner.

“Two signatures.”

Victor understood.

Vale succession protocol.

His biometric signature.

And his legal heir’s.

Celeste placed her hand against it.

The system paused.

She looked at Victor.

After everything she had done, the machine still recognized her as his daughter.

Victor’s eyes filled.

Two seconds.

AUTHORIZED.

The countdown reached zero.

Every screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Reed’s secure tablet began receiving files.

Thousands.

Evidence.

Names.

Transactions.

Protected identities remained sealed.

Julian collapsed.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

Celeste slowly removed her hand from the scanner.

“Why didn’t you remove me as your heir?”

Victor looked at her.

“I did.”

Her face fell.

“Then why did Atlas recognize me?”

Victor didn’t know.

A new message appeared.

SUCCESSION CONFIRMED.

PRIMARY OWNER: CELESTE VALE.

Victor stared.

That was impossible.

He had founded Vale Meridian.

He had designed Atlas.

But according to the original ownership file, neither belonged entirely to him.

A second name appeared beneath Celeste’s.

REBECCA SLOANE.

Celeste’s biological mother.

Then a final document opened.

It had been signed twenty-one years earlier.

Before Victor ever met Celeste.

And the signature at the bottom belonged to Victor’s supposedly dead father.
