Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Stayed

Lena killed the lights while Malik guided Victor toward the narrow fire escape.

The knocking became pounding.

“Mr. Vale, open the door!”

Victor’s injured fingers shook around the railing. He hated that his body had become the weakest part of his plan.

Then someone outside shouted, “Federal agents!”

Lena stopped.

Victor didn’t.

“Keep moving.”

“But what if—”

“Real agents don’t announce themselves to a dying man through a locked apartment door.”

They descended one floor before a crash echoed above them.

The apartment had been breached.

Malik helped Victor into the alley while Lena followed. They reached her sedan seconds before two men appeared on the fire escape.

Lena accelerated.

Victor watched the building disappear.

“You knew this might happen.”

“I knew someone would eventually come.”

“You used my home as bait?”

“No.”

His answer came instantly.

“I used myself.”

That mattered to Lena.

Not enough to forgive him, but enough to keep driving.

They stopped beneath an abandoned railway overpass. Victor finally explained.

Six months earlier, an internal auditor at Vale Meridian had discovered irregular transfers routed through dormant client accounts. The amounts were individually small but collectively enormous.

Thirty-eight million dollars had disappeared.

Celeste supervised the division containing those accounts.

Victor initially assumed she was being framed.

He secretly hired investigators to prove her innocence.

Instead, they found shell corporations linked to Julian.

Then the first investigator disappeared.

The second withdrew from the case after someone threatened his children.

Victor contacted the FBI.

“But Celeste learned you were investigating,” Lena said.

“Not immediately.”

“What changed?”

Victor looked down.

“I became sick.”

First came dizziness. Then confusion. Then falls.

Celeste insisted it was age.

Doctors disagreed.

Someone was altering his medication.

Victor began pretending to decline faster than he actually was.

He stopped challenging Celeste.

Allowed her to believe she had frightened him.

Allowed Julian to search his office.

Allowed forged corporate documents to circulate.

“And the camera?”

“Installed six months ago.”

Lena stared at him.

“So everything tonight—”

“Was recorded.”

“Even the door?”

Victor’s silence answered.

Lena’s anger flared.

“You let her hurt you?”

“I needed evidence she couldn’t explain away.”

“You could have died.”

“I nearly did.”

For the first time, Victor sounded ashamed rather than strategic.

Then Malik, sitting in the back, spoke quietly.

“Somebody’s following us.”

A black sedan appeared two intersections behind.

Lena turned twice.

It followed.

Victor reached beneath his robe and removed an old brass key.

“Drive to Union Station.”

“Why?”

“There’s a locker.”

“What’s inside?”

“The only copy of something Celeste thinks she destroyed.”

They reached the station and entered through a side entrance.

Locker 417 opened with the brass key.

Inside sat an envelope.

Victor tore it open.

It was empty.

Except for a photograph.

Celeste at fourteen.

Standing beside Victor.

And behind them was a woman Victor had not seen in twenty years.
