Chapter 9 - Jonathan Vale

Jonathan denied knowing Ethan.
He joined interview remotely from Switzerland.
He had sponsored thousands of backpacks.
No direct link.
Claire had almost married him.
Thomas would have become his stepson if found.
Why would missing child fear Jonathan?
Jonathan laughed bitterly.
“Claire, you're letting a child manipulate you.”
Maybe.
He provided passport records proving abroad when Ethan and Thomas allegedly shared gray house.
But money traveled.
Detective traced gray-house shell company.
Its parent company once received loan from Vale Capital.
Jonathan said routine financing.
Then Ethan whispered:
“He came at night.”
Claire asked:
“Jonathan?”
“I think.”
“You've seen him?”
“A man who looked like him.”
Again uncertain.
Then police recovered gray-house camera hard drive.
Mostly wiped.
One fragment survived.
Two boys entering kitchen.
One was Ethan.
The other stayed turned away.
Same height expected for Thomas.
Brown hair.
Left eyebrow not visible.
Claire watched ten times.
“Thomas?”
No one could say.
The second boy handed Ethan something.
A photograph.
Then pointed directly toward camera.
As though he knew it existed.
Timestamp seven months earlier.
Next surviving frame showed Ethan alone.
Where did second boy go?
No footage.
Then an audio fragment.
A child’s voice:
“If she believes you too soon, leave.”
Claire’s skin prickled.
Another voice, likely Ethan:
“What if she doesn't?”
“Make her.”
The clip ended.
Who was coaching whom?
Thomas coaching Ethan?
Ethan manipulating Thomas?
Claire did not know.
Lily asked Ethan.
He stared at her.
“You shouldn't have heard that.”
“Why?”
“Because you'll misunderstand.”
“Then explain.”
“I promised him.”
“Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“What did you promise?”
“That I wouldn't tell Claire until she was ready.”
Lily frowned.
“Ready for what?”
Ethan looked toward Claire across room.
“To choose.”
“Choose between what?”
Ethan did not answer.
That night Lily awoke and saw Ethan walking downstairs.
She followed.
He entered Claire’s study.
Opened safe.
How did he know code?
Claire had changed it after his arrival.
Lily watched him enter six digits without hesitation.
Safe opened.
Ethan removed folder labeled THOMAS — ACTIVE INVESTIGATION.
Then he whispered into small prepaid phone:
“She still has the original.”
A voice answered too faintly for Lily to understand.
Ethan:
“No. She still thinks I'm helping her find him.”
Lily’s heart stopped.
Floor creaked.
Ethan turned.
Their eyes met.
He slowly ended call.

Then smiled.
“Couldn't sleep?”
