Chapter 12 - The Person Behind Gray

Graham Voss was found alive in West Virginia.

Sick.

Broke.

Terrified.

He admitted running identity-conditioning scheme.

But claimed it ended months earlier.

“I never sent Ethan to Claire.”

“Did you train him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know which boy was Thomas?”

Voss hesitated.

“At the end.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Which?”

“I won't tell you without protection.”

Police arranged counsel.

Voss explained Andrew hired him after disappearance.

Years later Voss found child-placement records suggesting Thomas had passed through illegal guardianship network.

He became obsessed.

Instead of reporting properly, he saw money opportunity.

He located several boys whose ages/appearance fit.

He trained them.

Criminal.

Exploitative.

But then he found actual Thomas.

How?

A childhood surgical record.

Thomas had undergone minor ear procedure at two.

Unique scar pattern.

One of boys matched.

Which?

Voss refused until DNA comparison.

Claire demanded Ethan tested against preserved Thomas newborn blood spot.

Direct result:

No match.

Ethan was definitively not Thomas.

Already Claire knew not her son, but now absolute.

What about kinship signal?

Ethan was distantly related through Andrew’s paternal side.

His biological mother belonged to Whitmore extended family.

That coincidence may have helped Voss select him.

Then Claire asked Voss:

“Where is Thomas?”

“I don't know anymore.”

“Ethan does.”

Voss looked toward observation glass.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Thomas chose him.”

“For what?”

Voss whispered:

“To go first.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“First where?”

“Into your family.”

Why would Thomas send impostor?

Voss said Thomas distrusted Claire.

He believed someone in Whitmore household had been involved in disappearance.

Voss fed paranoia to control him.

Eventually Thomas and Ethan escaped together.

After escape, Voss lost them.

So Ethan’s approach could actually have been Thomas’s test.

Maybe Ethan was not trying replace him.

Maybe Thomas sent him to assess Claire.

That interpretation fit.

Claire wanted believe.

Then Voss was shown ledger with “USE LILY.”

He shook head.

“Not mine.”

Whose handwriting?

He recognized.

“Ethan’s.”

Claire stared through glass.

Ethan had written evaluation ledger himself.

Meaning after escaping Voss—

he continued the impersonation program.
