Chapter 5 - Andrew’s Second Family
Police found Ethan three blocks away.
He claimed panic.
Claire brought him back.
Not because she still believed he was Thomas.
Because he was nine, frightened, and apparently connected biologically to missing son.
That connection became central.
Andrew Whitmore had secrets.
Financial records showed monthly payments before Thomas disappeared.
$2,400.
Recipient:
MARA HOUSE SERVICES.
Claire had never heard name.
Ethan reacted when detective said “Mara.”
He had already mentioned woman named Mara.
Was that his caregiver?
Company dissolved after Thomas vanished.
Owner:
Mara Whitmore.
Claire stared.
Andrew had a sister?
No.
At least not one Claire knew.
Further records showed Mara Whitmore was Andrew’s first cousin, born Mara Collins, later briefly married into another Whitmore branch.
She ran informal transitional housing for women and children.
Andrew donated privately.
Why conceal?
His father disapproved.
Could Ethan have lived there?
Mara was alive.
They found her in Delaware.
She denied knowing Ethan.
Detective showed photograph.
Mara’s face changed.
“I've seen him.”
“Where?”
“Six months ago.”
Ethan had approached her.
Asked about Thomas Whitmore.
Claire’s pulse accelerated.
Why would homeless child ask about Thomas months before meeting Lily?
Mara said Ethan carried photograph.
Thomas at age three.
Same missing-person image widely circulated online.
Maybe he had seen it.
But Ethan asked unusual questions.
“What did Thomas call his rocking horse?”
“What food did Claire make him?”
“What code was on nursery?”
Claire felt cold.
Ethan had not remembered those things.
He had researched them.
Mara admitted she answered some.
Not nursery code.
Where did 417 come from?
Mara didn't know.
Claire confronted Ethan.
He cried.
“I was trying to find out who I am.”
“Why Thomas?”
“Because people told me I looked like him.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“You went to Mara.”
“I remembered her name.”
“From where?”
“My childhood.”
Still plausible.
If Ethan had lived around same network as Thomas, he might know.
Then Claire asked:
“Did you deliberately meet Lily?”
“No.”
Lily stepped forward.
“Yes.”
She showed map she had recovered.
Not from Ethan’s room.
From alley trash after first day.
Police found Ethan’s fingerprints.
Map marked Lily’s school.
Bakery.
Claire’s mansion.
And a circle around Claire’s photograph clipped from charity magazine.
Claire looked at boy.
Ethan stopped crying.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then:
“I needed her to bring me to you.”
There it was.
Claire whispered:
“Why?”

Ethan looked straight at her.
“Because I know what happened to Thomas.”
