Chapter 4 - The Brother in the Grave

Thomas finally stopped calling the burial mistake “confusion” when DNA results became undeniable.
Michael Hale had been buried as Robert.
Which meant the family had experienced two disappearances but only one death.
Laura demanded answers.
Thomas provided none.
Vanessa provided one.
Through her attorney, she requested a deal.
Not immunity.
Consideration for cooperation.
Laura did not control prosecution.
She did, however, agree to hear what Vanessa claimed.
They met through attorneys with investigators present.
Vanessa looked different without the leather jacket, heels and polished confidence.
Smaller.
Still dangerous.
Still responsible for what she had done to Ethan.
Laura felt no sympathy.
“Where is Robert?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Alive when I last saw him.”
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
“Zurich?”
“Yes.”
“Why doesn't he come home?”
“He doesn't know home exists.”
Laura's fingers tightened.
“What did you do to him?”
“I didn't do it.”
“Who did?”
Vanessa looked toward the mirrored observation window.
“Thomas.”
Thomas arranged for Robert to be taken after the Vermont crash.
But according to Vanessa, the crash itself was not planned.
Robert had been driving to meet a federal attorney when his vehicle lost control on black ice.
Michael was following him.
Why?
Thomas ordered Michael to stop Robert from delivering evidence.
Michael reached the crash first.
Robert was injured but alive.
Michael called Thomas.
Then another vehicle arrived.
Thomas's private security contractor.
They removed Robert.
Michael panicked.
He threatened to tell Laura.
Hours later, Michael was dead.
“How?” Laura asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don't know.”
“That's convenient.”
“I know Thomas ordered me to help create the false identity trail. I know Michael was alive when I left. The next morning Thomas told me Michael had overdosed.”
Toxicology from the exhumed body later showed a sedative combination inconsistent with Michael's prescriptions.
Not proof of murder.
But enough for deeper investigation.
Why put Michael in Robert's grave?
Because the crash had already created a plausible death.
Thomas needed Robert legally dead.
He needed Michael gone.
One body solved both problems.
“Why keep Robert alive?”
Vanessa looked at Laura.
“Passwords.”
Robert had encrypted Hale Meridian records.
Some access required biometric verification and rotating passphrases.
Thomas needed him.
But Robert suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash.
Memory problems followed.
Thomas moved him between private facilities under false names.
Eventually Zurich.
“Why were you there?”
“To see whether he remembered.”
“Did he?”
“Pieces.”
“Me?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Not then.”
“Ethan?”
Silence.
Laura stood.
Vanessa quickly said:
“He remembered a song.”
Laura stopped.
“What song?”
“Something about a yellow submarine.”
Laura closed her eyes.
Ethan had been obsessed with “Yellow Submarine” when he was four.
Robert sang it terribly every night because Ethan loved the repetition.
“He remembered our son.”
“Maybe.”
Laura sat again.
“Why attack Ethan?”
Vanessa's face changed.
Thomas had become convinced Ethan possessed information Robert gave him before the crash.
Not because Ethan understood financial crimes.
Because Ethan remembered patterns exactly.
Robert had used his son's pattern games to conceal recovery codes.
The blue key.
Book sequence.
Numbers.
Possibly more.
Thomas believed Ethan was a living backup system.
Vanessa insisted the pool incident was not planned as a killing.
Thomas had told her to frighten Ethan into revealing what he remembered.
Laura stared at her.
“You threw a child who cannot swim into a pool.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Call it whatever helps you sleep. He could have died.”
Vanessa's eyes lowered.
Laura continued:
“And you watched.”
That ended the excuses.
Then Vanessa revealed why she stayed near Thomas after Michael's death.
She had initially worked for him.
She was not Michael's random fiancée.
Thomas recruited her years earlier as an analyst at Hale Meridian.
She became involved with Michael as part of Thomas's effort to monitor him.
Then she genuinely fell in love with Michael.
Maybe.
Laura no longer trusted emotional claims without actions.
After Michael died, Vanessa stayed because Thomas threatened to implicate her.
Yet she also continued benefiting financially.
Victim and accomplice were not mutually exclusive.
Then Vanessa said:
“There's another person looking for Robert.”
“Who?”
“Someone Thomas is afraid of.”
“Name.”
“Eleanor Hale.”
Laura frowned.
“Robert's mother?”
Thomas's first wife.
Robert and Michael's mother.
Dead for twenty-six years.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's what Thomas told his sons.”
Laura almost laughed.
Another Hale family death that apparently required verification.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why mention her?”
Vanessa slid a photograph across the table.
An elegant silver-haired woman stood outside the Zurich bank.
Same day as Robert.
On her wrist was a distinctive sapphire bracelet.
Laura had seen it before.
In an old photograph of Robert as a toddler.
His mother wore it.
