Chapter 1 - The Night Ethan Went Under

By the time Laura Hale realized Vanessa was walking toward Ethan, the music was still playing.

That was the detail she would remember most.

Champagne glasses still clinked beneath the strings of white lights surrounding the pool. Guests were laughing beside Thomas Hale's enormous stone mansion outside Greenwich, Connecticut. Somewhere near the terrace, a quartet was playing something soft and expensive.

And Vanessa was smiling.

Ethan stood alone near the pool.

Nine years old.

Soaked cardigan clinging to his narrow shoulders because Vanessa had already “accidentally” knocked a drink over him twenty minutes earlier and then insisted he rinse himself near the pool.

Ethan hated wet clothing.

Laura knew that.

He hated unexpected touch even more.

Her son was autistic, and unfamiliar noise, sudden physical contact, and chaotic environments could overwhelm him quickly.

That did not make him weak.

It made Vanessa's next move unforgivable.

She grabbed him.

Ethan screamed.

Laura dropped her glass.

“ETHAN!”

Vanessa forced him backward.

Ethan disappeared into the pool.

For half a second, nobody understood.

Then his hands broke through the surface.

Wild.

Desperate.

Ethan couldn't swim.

Laura ran.

Someone caught her hair from behind.

Pain tore across her scalp.

She spun and saw Thomas.

Her father-in-law.

“Let me go!”

Thomas dragged her backward.

Laura kicked.

Clawed.

Screamed.

“Help him!”

Guests finally began turning.

Vanessa remained beside the pool.

Watching.

Not helping.

Ethan's head surfaced once.

“Mom!”

Then vanished.

Laura screamed so violently her throat burned.

Thomas forced her toward the tiles.

“Calm down.”

“My son is drowning!”

Thomas's face contained no panic.

That terrified Laura more than anything.

Then he said:

“He doesn't deserve what Robert left him.”

Laura stopped struggling for perhaps half a heartbeat.

Robert.

Her dead husband.

Ethan's father.

Thomas immediately realized his mistake.

Laura saw it.

“What did you say?”

Thomas tightened his grip.

Nothing about this was spontaneous.

Nothing about tonight was an accident.

Laura bit his arm.

Thomas recoiled.

She broke free.

Laura ran three steps and jumped into the pool wearing her evening gown and heels.

Cold water swallowed her.

She found Ethan beneath the surface.

Pulled.

Kicked upward.

Someone helped her at the edge.

Then everyone helped.

Amazing how courage appeared after witnesses realized other people were watching.

Laura dragged Ethan onto the tiles.

“Ethan.”

Nothing.

“No. No, no, no.”

She began compressions.

Someone called emergency services.

Someone else screamed at Vanessa.

Thomas shouted that everyone needed to calm down.

Laura heard none of it.

“Come on, baby.”

Ethan coughed.

Water spilled from his mouth.

He gasped.

Laura collapsed over him.

“Mommy's here.”

His fingers clutched her soaked dress.

Then Laura remembered the phone strapped inside the waterproof pouch beneath her bracelet.

She took it out.

Pressed one button.

Inside Thomas's ballroom, the enormous projection screen illuminated.

Video appeared.

Vanessa grabbing Ethan.

Thomas restraining Laura.

Their words.

Their faces.

Everything.

The guests went silent.

Then furious.

Food from the buffet began flying toward Vanessa and Thomas as people shouted for security to stop them from leaving.

Laura barely looked.

She was staring at Thomas.

Because the recording had captured something she had missed while fighting him.

Just before Ethan fell into the water, Thomas had whispered to Vanessa:

“Make sure the boy can't testify.”

Testify.

Not inherit.

Not interfere.

Testify.

Laura looked down.

Ethan was conscious now, shaking against her.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

His lips trembled.

“Grandpa knows about the blue room.”

Laura froze.

“What blue room?”

Ethan pressed his face against her.

“The room Daddy showed me before he died.”

Robert Hale had been dead for fourteen months.

Laura had believed the last secrets of her marriage died with him.

She was wrong.

And across the pool, Thomas heard Ethan too.

For the first time all evening, the sixty-three-year-old patriarch looked genuinely terrified.
