Chapter 3 - The Man in Zurich
Laura refused to believe Robert was alive because of one photograph.
She had identified his body.
Or believed she had.
The crash had been severe.
Robert's face was badly injured.
The funeral home discouraged an open casket.
Dental records confirmed identity.
Thomas handled most arrangements because Laura could barely function.
That memory now made her nauseous.
Rachel began with the dental records.
The dentist listed on the identification report had retired three years before Robert's death.
His former practice had been purchased by a corporate chain.
The signature confirming Robert's dental comparison belonged to Dr. Peter Sloan.
Dr. Sloan denied signing it.
Forgery.
Laura sat silently in Rachel's office.
“So I buried someone else.”
“Possibly.”
“Whose body?”
“We don't know yet.”
Exhumation was requested.
Thomas's lawyers opposed it.
That alone convinced Laura it was necessary.
Meanwhile, police searched Thomas's mansion pursuant to warrants related to the pool incident and suspected evidence tampering.
They found the bookcase.
Seven leather-bound books.
Push three.
One.
Six.
A concealed door opened.
Behind it was a narrow secure room.
Not blue.
Exactly as Ethan said.
Inside were boxes.
A computer.
And an empty hook labeled with blue tape.
The key was no longer necessary.
Someone had already opened the room.
Recently.
The computer's drives had been removed.
Several boxes were missing.
But what remained changed the case.
Robert had maintained a private archive.
Emails.
Bank records.
Internal Hale Meridian documents.
Audio recordings.
Most were encrypted.
One file wasn't.
It was addressed:
FOR LAURA — IF ETHAN REMEMBERS THE KEY.
Laura stared at those words for a long time.
Robert knew their son.
He knew Ethan would remember.
The video began.
Robert sat in the blue room.
Alive.
Tired.
Recorded seventeen days before his supposed death.
“Laura, if you're seeing this, something happened before I could tell you everything.”
She covered her mouth.
Robert continued.
“My father has been moving money through Hale Meridian for years.”
Thomas controlled offshore structures nominally designed for international investments.
Robert discovered some accounts were being used to conceal ownership of properties and trusts.
Not necessarily illegal by themselves.
But several signatures appeared forged.
One belonged to Laura.
Another belonged to Ethan.
Ethan was eight at the time.
Robert investigated.
The forged documents transferred beneficial interests away from a trust established by Robert's maternal grandmother.

$38 million.
Laura paused the video.
Thirty-eight million.
Thomas's statement at the pool suddenly made sense.
Robert left Ethan something.
But Robert continued.
“This isn't only about money.”
Laura pressed play.
One of the trust's properties included a medical-research company:
Ardent Behavioral Systems.
Laura knew the name.
Ardent operated specialized educational clinics.
Ethan had attended one briefly at age six.
They left after Laura disliked how rigidly staff treated autistic children.
Robert had supported her decision immediately.
Now she learned why.
Hale Meridian secretly owned Ardent.
Thomas concealed that ownership.
Robert discovered Ardent collected extensive behavioral and genetic information from families without adequately explaining how the data could be used in affiliated research.
Robert began preparing disclosures.
Then Thomas learned.
“I don't know what Dad will do,” Robert said on video. “But Vanessa knows I found the files.”
Vanessa?
At the time, Vanessa had supposedly met the family only months later.
Laura replayed it.
Robert clearly said her name.
Vanessa knew Robert before his death.
Robert continued:
“If I disappear, do not assume I'm dead until you verify it independently.”
Laura's eyes filled.
She had not verified anything.
She had trusted Thomas.
The video ended with Robert leaning closer.
“One more thing. If they say I stole from the foundation, they're lying.”
Then:
“Don't trust Michael.”
Laura froze.
Michael.
Thomas's younger son.
Vanessa's former fiancé.
The man who moved overseas.
Why?
Rachel searched travel records.
Michael Hale had not moved to London as the family claimed.
His passport had not been used internationally in eleven months.
His condominium in Connecticut had been empty.
Where was Michael?
Then exhumation results arrived.
The man buried beneath Robert Hale's headstone was not Robert.
DNA comparison excluded him.
But investigators found a familial match.
The body was related to Thomas Hale.
Male.
Approximately thirty-four.
Laura felt sick.
Robert had one brother.
