Chapter 9 - The Girl in the Branches
Rose was not another Carter.
That was first correction.
Nathan’s phrase “Carter child” referred to child staying temporarily with Carter family.
Rose Hart, eight years old, daughter of a tenant whose apartment was being condemned.
Nathan’s parents let Rose sleep in spare room for several nights while mother searched housing.
She often played with Nathan and Samuel.
On October 14, Rose was hiding in oak.
She saw Samuel enter tunnel.
More importantly, she saw who brought him out.
Robert Dane.
Children’s Aid administrator.
Rose told Nathan.
Nathan was terrified.
He told father.
Nathan Sr. went to Children’s Aid demanding Samuel returned.
Robert claimed no Samuel Vale was there.
Because file already said Caleb Reed.
Nathan Sr. believed bureaucratic mistake.
He contacted Samuel’s father.
Both men began searching.
So why didn't Rose testify?
She disappeared from neighborhood two days later.
Not mysteriously.
Her mother accepted relocation housing in another state.
No forwarding information reached Carter family.
For decades Nathan searched.
In 1989, he found Rose.
She confirmed Robert Dane had personally carried injured Samuel from tunnel.
She also remembered something else.
Samuel was conscious.
He kept repeating:
“I saw the book.”
That was black property ledger.
Rose gave Nathan photograph taken by neighborhood photographer that evening.
She had been in branches.
That explained old hand.
It was Rose.
And forty-eight years later Eli’s hand had appeared in same place by coincidence created by Caleb’s instructions.
History had visually repeated itself without anything supernatural.
But where was Rose now?
Nathan’s recording said she died in 2017.
Margaret asked:
“Why didn't Nathan ever tell me?”
Recording continued.
“Because Rose made me promise not to.”
Why?
Rose had eventually worked for Children’s Aid under different name.
She had returned as adult to investigate from inside.
She helped Nathan and Caleb obtain records.
Exposing her could have endangered career and family.
After her death, restriction no longer mattered.
Then cassette shifted.
Caleb’s voice:
“Margaret will think this is about Samuel. It isn't anymore.”
Another pause.
“The ledger shows why they kept me misplaced.”
“But photograph shows who knew.”
Nathan:
“Robert Dane?”
Caleb:
“No.”
“The person who paid him.”
The black ledger contained coded payments.
Investigators decoded property initials.
One repeated source funded Robert Dane’s bonuses.
BCF.
Bellweather Community Foundation.
Who controlled it in 1978?
David opened historical filings.
Chairman:
Edward Carter.
Nathan’s father.
David’s grandfather.
