Chapter 7 - The Man Protecting the Tree’s Secret
Police protection changed everything.
Noah and Eli were no longer allowed near Bellweather Lane.
David moved Margaret temporarily into Carter house despite Claire’s distrust.
The arrangement was tense.
Margaret had answers, but never enough.
Then investigators traced note paper.
It came from David’s own development office.
Suspicion returned to Martin Hale.
Hale finally agreed to talk.
His father, William Hale, had served as attorney for Bellweather Children’s Aid in 1978.
Before dying, William left sealed files describing serious placement irregularities.
Martin discovered them when Carter Development acquired brick building.
He should have reported them.
Instead he buried them.
Why?
The redevelopment agreement carried enormous penalties if historical claims halted construction.
Martin feared destroying David’s company.
And his own career.
He intercepted Margaret’s letters.
Accelerated tree removal.
But he swore he did not threaten children.
Police searched his home.
No matching printer.
No brick residue.
No evidence connecting him to note.
He was guilty of concealment.
Not necessarily intimidation.
Then Nathan’s old files produced another name:
ROBERT DANE.
Former Bellweather Children’s Aid administrator.
Dane approved Samuel’s transfer as Caleb Reed.
He later became respected family-court consultant.
He died in 2008.
His daughter, Helen Dane, now sixty-eight, still lived nearby.
Same approximate age and build as Margaret.
Doorbell footage from Carter house was enhanced.
The woman outside Noah’s house was Helen.
The child beside her was her grandson, Mason.
She had deliberately dressed similarly to Margaret.
Why?
Helen confessed only after police confronted her.
She wanted Noah’s family to believe Margaret continued stalking him.
If David obtained restraining order, Margaret would be kept away from demolition site.
Helen knew something was buried beneath oak.
Her mother had spent decades terrified that old Children’s Aid records would surface.
Helen believed archive would make Robert Dane look like child trafficker.
She wanted retrieve it first.
Claire was furious.
“You used another child to frighten mine.”
Helen looked ashamed.
“I told Mason it was a joke.”
“It wasn't.”
No.
Again an adult had used a child to protect an adult secret.
But Helen denied threatening Margaret.
Then handwriting comparison on LET THE TREE DIE note came back.
It matched neither Helen nor Martin.
It matched a person nobody expected.
Owen Reed.
Eli’s father.
Samuel Vale’s son.
Eli stared at result.
“My dad?”
That night Owen called.
His voice shook.
“Do not dig beneath that tree.”
Margaret demanded why.
