Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Was Already Dead

Michael Ashford had vanished at sea.
His overturned boat was found fifteen miles offshore.
Blood on deck matched Michael.
Coast Guard searched for five days.
No body.
He was legally presumed dead months later.
Claire grieved.
Victor watched her grieve.
So Eleanor’s claim sounded impossible.
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“His face?”
“Yes.”
“You spoke to him?”
“No.”
“How could you keep this from me?”
“Claire told me to.”
Again.
Another promise.
Another person deciding Victor could not handle truth.
Michael entered Wing C using visitor credential issued under name:
MATTHEW ARDEN.
Security footage had been erased.
But parking record survived.
Vehicle belonged to Arden Clinical Logistics.
Victor’s investigators traced company.
It supplied specialized hospital transport.
One director:
Michael Ashford.
Not under his own name.
Through holding company.
Michael had created it eleven months before boating accident.
So his disappearance may have been planned.
Why?
Financial trouble?
Witness protection?
Affair?
Corporate scheme?
Then Claire’s old emails produced clue.
Three weeks before Michael vanished, he wrote:
If anything happens to me, don't trust a clean death.
Claire replied:
Then stop speaking in riddles and tell me what you found.
Michael:
It involves your father’s foundation.
Victor read twice.
His charitable medical foundation?
Ashford Children’s Health Foundation funded pediatric respiratory research.
One program partnered with St. Adrian.
Eleanor sat on board.
Claire served as volunteer adviser.
Michael had audited logistics contracts.
Blue vials.
Hospital.
Foundation.
Michael.
Everything converged.
Victor asked Eleanor:
“Did Michael take Claire from hospital?”
“I don't know.”
“You saw him arrive.”
“Yes.”
“When did you last see Claire?”
“4:10 a.m.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“She told me Sophie wasn't sick.”
Victor frowned.
Sophie had suffered breathing episodes since infancy.
“What does that mean?”
“Claire said somebody was making her look sick.”
Victor went cold.
“Who?”
“She didn't know.”
Then why Sophie collapsed tonight?
Had same manipulation resumed?
Laboratory results returned.
Blue vial from dinner contained a drug that could temporarily worsen breathing in susceptible children if used incorrectly.
But Sophie had not consumed enough from vial to explain episode.
Meaning her attack had begun before she dropped it.
Something else had triggered it.
Investigators searched dining table.
In Sophie’s water cup they found trace of aerosolized botanical extract.
A strong respiratory irritant.
Someone had exposed Sophie separately.
The blue vial might not have caused collapse at all.
It might have been evidence Sophie was carrying.
Victor looked at Eleanor.
“Who gave Sophie vial?”
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
Security reviewed footage.
Thirty seconds before video began, Sophie walked from behind curtain near service door.
A woman’s hand extended from off camera.
Placed blue vial into Sophie’s palm.
On wrist was distinctive bracelet.
May you like
Victor recognized it.
Claire’s.
