Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Turned Away

The blue vial fell before Victor Ashford understood what was happening.

His two-year-old granddaughter, Sophie, had been walking unsteadily beside the long dining table, one tiny hand wrapped around a small blue medicine vial.

Then her knees buckled.

“Sophie!”

She collapsed onto the carpet.

Crystal glasses rattled as Victor shoved his chair backward and rushed to her.

Sophie gasped desperately.

“I can’t breathe…”

Victor dropped beside her and grabbed the portable oxygen mask from the medical kit kept nearby because of Sophie’s recurring respiratory episodes.

He supported her head against his arm.

“Easy. Grandpa’s here.”

Her little fingers clenched his sleeve.

After several terrifying breaths, her chest began moving more steadily.

Then Sophie pointed.

Not toward the vial.

Toward Eleanor.

Victor followed her finger.

Eleanor Ashford stood at the opposite side of the table in a champagne gown, her face unnaturally still.

Victor picked up the vial.

The label had partially peeled away.

“What did you give her?”

“Her usual medicine.”

Victor looked at Sophie.

Then at Eleanor.

“Why is the label coming off?”

Eleanor reached for it.

“Give it to me.”

Victor pulled away.

Something in Eleanor’s expression convinced him immediately that this was not merely a medication mistake.

Security moved closer as the confrontation erupted. Victor forced Eleanor away from him and immediately returned to Sophie rather than pursuing her.

Then Sophie pushed oxygen mask slightly aside.

“Grandpa…”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Mommy drank it too.”

Everything stopped.

Sophie’s mother, Claire Ashford, had been dead for twenty-two months.

Victor looked down at vial.

He peeled damaged label away.

Beneath it was another label.

Older.

Faded.

ST. ADRIAN MEDICAL CENTER.

And a date.

October 14.

The night Claire supposedly died.

Victor’s hand began trembling.

Then Sophie pointed past him.

Toward the guests.

“Mommy?”

Victor turned.

A woman near the far chandelier immediately turned her face away.

Eleanor saw her.

For the first time that evening, Eleanor looked genuinely terrified.

“DON’T LET HER SEE SOPHIE!”

Victor stared at her.

The mysterious woman began turning back.

But security moved through recoiling guests, blocking Victor’s view for only seconds.

When they passed—

she was gone.

Victor looked toward Eleanor.

“Who was that?”

Eleanor said nothing.

“WHO WAS THAT?”

Her composure finally cracked.

“I don't know.”

Victor held up blue vial.

“You recognized her.”

“No.”

“Sophie recognized her.”

“She’s two years old!”

Victor leaned closer.

“Then why were you afraid of them seeing each other?”

Eleanor looked at Sophie.

May you like

And whispered something far worse than a confession.

“Because Claire made me promise they never would.”
