Chapter 5 - Rebecca Vale

Rebecca did not die at Ashford Manor.

That much became increasingly clear.

But what happened afterward remained buried beneath private medicine, family power, and altered records.

Adrian hired an investigator.

No press.

Not yet.

Victoria still missing.

That came first.

Then a bank record surfaced.

The $3.5 million trust created after Rebecca’s “death” was called:

The Bluebird Settlement Trust.

Beneficiary:

R.V.

Rebecca Vale?

Maybe.

The trust remained active for twenty-two years.

Payments went to a residential medical facility in Maine.

St. Catherine’s House.

Closed eight years earlier.

Patient registry mostly sealed.

One woman admitted in January 1990 under initials:

R.V.

Age twenty-six.

Diagnosis:

Traumatic brain injury.

Memory impairment.

Pregnancy complications.

Adrian sat back.

Rebecca survived.

The fall caused severe neurological damage.

Her family hid her.

Why announce death?

Eleanor finally confessed.

Rebecca’s father made the decision.

He feared scandal.

Mental impairment.

Pregnancy outside a collapsing marriage.

Ashford litigation.

He convinced Richard that declaring Rebecca dead would protect everyone.

Protect.

Another word Adrian was learning to distrust.

“What happened to her baby?”

Eleanor whispered:

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“Not after the transfer.”

Then Victoria’s notebook contained one name:

Charlotte Vale.

Who?

Rebecca’s younger sister.

Still alive.

Seventy-one.

Virginia.

Adrian contacted her.

She hung up.

Second call:

“Stop digging.”

“Victoria Ashford contacted you, didn’t she?”

Silence.

“Where is my wife?”

Charlotte whispered:

“I warned her.”

“About what?”

“That Rebecca was not the worst secret.”

Then she hung up.

Adrian’s investigator found flight records.

Victoria had flown to Virginia two days earlier.

Not Boston.

She lied about her destination.

Then drove toward Charlottesville.

Last phone ping near Charlotte’s property.

Adrian called police for a welfare check.

No Victoria.

Charlotte claimed she visited and left.

Then the police found Victoria’s rental car ten miles away.

Door unlocked.

Purse inside.

Phone missing.

No blood.

No signs of struggle.

Then Adrian received a text from an unknown number.

STOP ASKING ABOUT REBECCA.

No signature.

Second message:

ASK WHO PAID FOR LILY.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Lily?

What did his seven-year-old daughter have to do with a woman who fell down a staircase thirty-seven years earlier?

Eleanor saw the message.

Her face changed.

Adrian noticed.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You know why they mentioned Lily.”

Eleanor began crying.

The first time he had seen her cry since Richard’s funeral.

“Adrian…”

“What?”

“You need to understand that Victoria wanted a child more than anything.”

His stomach dropped.

“What are you saying?”

Eleanor looked toward the upstairs hallway.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Lily’s adoption was not random.”
