Chapter 13 - Madeline Comes Home

Madeline arrived the next afternoon.

Thirty-six.

Dark blonde hair.

Simple coat.

No jewelry.

No resemblance Adrian could ignore once he knew.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

His sister.

She stopped in the entrance hall.

Lily stood halfway down the stairs with Victoria.

“Mom?”

Lily’s voice was tiny.

Madeline froze.

Seven years collapsed into one second.

No one moved.

Then Madeline knelt.

Not reaching.

Not assuming.

“Hi, Lily.”

Lily looked at Victoria.

Then Adrian.

Confused.

She knew she was adopted.

But Madeline existed mostly as a name in age-appropriate conversations.

Now the name had a face.

Lily walked slowly closer.

“Are you my birth mommy?”

Madeline cried.

“Yes.”

Lily thought.

“Did you give me away because I was bad?”

Every adult in the room broke.

Madeline shook her head.

“No. Never.”

“Then why?”

Madeline looked at Adrian for guidance.

He nodded slightly.

Simple truth.

“I was scared and didn't have a safe life for a baby. I thought another family could give you things I couldn’t.”

Lily looked at Adrian.

“He did.”

Madeline smiled through tears.

“I can see that.”

No instant embrace.

No forced reunion.

Good.

Then Eleanor entered.

Madeline stood.

The two women stared.

Mother and daughter.

Though Eleanor had not raised her.

“I’m sorry,” Eleanor whispered.

Madeline said:

“For which part?”

Eleanor had no answer.

Exactly.

Then Thomas arrived.

Alive.

Seventy-four.

Cane.

White hair.

Lily whispered:

“Grandpa Tom.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You let her call you that?”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I shouldn't have.”

He believed he was Madeline’s father until weeks ago.

Thus Lily’s grandfather.

When he learned the truth, he came to Eleanor.

Then disappeared again because Crane threatened him.

Why return now?

Grace contacted him.

Everyone was finally in one room.

Except Crane.

The family counsel.

The man who inherited Richard’s system.

Then police arrived.

Crane had been arrested.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Coercion.

Obstruction.

Not a cinematic mastermind.

A lawyer who convinced himself that preserving Ashford stability justified increasingly criminal acts.

He would answer in court.

Then Thomas handed Adrian a final blue envelope.

“This one was Richard’s.”

“Why do you have it?”

“Rebecca gave it to me before she died.”

Inside:

A copy of Richard’s private confession.

Not legal.

Personal.

He admitted knowing Madeline was his daughter.

Admitted tracking her.

Admitted manipulating Thomas.

Admitted letting Eleanor believe a lie.

Then one line:

If Madeline ever returns, Eleanor will blame herself for everything. Do not let her. I built the machine. She merely learned to live inside it.

Adrian looked at his mother.

Eleanor cried silently.

But Richard’s confession continued.

And then came the line that shifted everything again:

Lily must never inherit Ashford Manor.

Adrian frowned.

Why?

Because the manor did not belong to Richard.

Not fully.

The title itself had been obtained through Rebecca’s family trust.

And a reversion clause existed.

If Richard died without honoring a specific obligation—

ownership returned to Rebecca’s surviving legal heirs.

Who were they?

Rebecca had no surviving child.

Sarah was not her daughter.

So possibly Charlotte Vale.

Then why mention Lily?

Richard wrote:

Because Lily is the only person who can prove who Rebecca’s child really was.

Adrian stared.

They had believed Rebecca’s baby was Sarah.

Maybe wrong.

Again.

May you like

Then Thomas whispered:

“Sarah was the decoy.”
