Everything stopped.
Eleanor had another daughter.
Madeline Cross.
Lily’s birth mother.
Which made Lily Eleanor’s granddaughter.
Adrian stared at his mother.
“You put your own granddaughter in a cage.”
Eleanor flinched.
“I didn't know when you adopted her.”
“When did you know?”
“Two years ago.”
Worse.
Who was Madeline’s father?
Thomas Ashford.
Adrian nearly laughed from disbelief.
Eleanor and Thomas?
When?
After Rebecca’s fall.
After Thomas lost his shares.
He and Eleanor both hated Richard.
Both trapped.
One night became several.
Eleanor became pregnant.
Richard never knew.
She disappeared for months under the excuse of medical treatment.
Gave birth privately.
Placed the baby for adoption.
Madeline.
So Lily descended directly from Eleanor and Thomas.
Adrian adopted his own biological niece?

Eleanor feared he would destroy Thomas completely.
Thomas already lost shares.
He fled.
Eleanor gave up the baby.
Then years later Thomas found her.
He located Madeline as an adult.

But Madeline rejected him.
Then Lily was born.
Thomas watched from a distance.
When Lily entered Adrian’s adoption process, Thomas recognized the Ashford name.
He panicked.
Thought Eleanor orchestrated it.
She did not.

Then Victoria uncovered Marion Chase’s records.
Eleanor had not bought Lily’s placement.
Thomas had.
The $750,000 came from an account Eleanor controlled—but Thomas had secretly funded it.
He used Eleanor’s trust routing to disguise the source.
Why?
To ensure the agency did not place Lily far away.
He wanted Lily near family.
Without revealing himself.
Again adults rearranging a child’s life without consent.
Then the biggest question:
Why did Madeline surrender Lily?
Victoria found her.
Alive.
Colorado.
New name.
She agreed to speak.
Madeline said she loved Lily.
But Thomas appeared during pregnancy.
Told her about Eleanor.
Ashfords.
Money.
Secrets.
Madeline wanted none of it.
Then someone else contacted her.
A lawyer.
Threatened her.
Same story.
Who sent him?
Not Eleanor.
Not Thomas.
The lawyer was traced to—
Richard Ashford’s old office.
Impossible.
Richard dead.
But his former chief counsel, Harold Crane, still alive.
Crane had served Eleanor after Richard’s death too.
He knew everything.
Why threaten Madeline?
Because Richard left instructions.
A sealed contingency.
If Thomas ever had descendants who could challenge the old share transfer, Ashford counsel must prevent them from entering family governance.
Thomas’s line threatened corporate control.
Even decades later.
Crane followed a dead man’s orders.
Then Adrian asked:
“Could Lily claim the shares Thomas gave up?”
Victoria nodded.
“Maybe.”
There it was.
Money again.
But Eleanor looked genuinely horrified.
“I didn't know.”
Adrian believed her.
That scared him more.
Because someone else had been controlling events from the shadows.
Then Victoria placed the blue envelope on the table.
Inside was one page missing.
The final page.
The page naming who currently controlled Thomas’s old shares.
Someone had removed it.
Eleanor whispered:
“Crane.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
