Chapter 7 - The Basement Archive

Victor was detained for financial questioning, not murder.
They lacked enough evidence for that.
Ethan hated it.
But Nathan reminded him:
“If we move before we understand the structure, Victor walks.”
So Ethan returned to Room 417.
Sophia did not.
She needed distance.
He respected it.
Evelyn remembered one thing Michael had told her before disappearing.
“B-17.”
The same type of code Ethan had found after Victor’s meeting.
Hospital basement.
Archive compartment seventeen.
St. Mary’s claimed it no longer existed.
Ethan and Nathan found the old archive blueprint.
It did.
Behind a renovated imaging department sat a sealed records corridor.
Sophia appeared before they entered.
Ethan looked surprised.
“I thought—”
“This is about my father.”
“Right.”
“Not us.”
“I know.”
They entered together.
B-17 contained no patient files.
Only one metal evidence box.
Inside:
A VHS tape.
An old police badge.
Michael Reed.
And a sealed letter addressed to Sophia.
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
Sophia, if you ever receive this, I failed to come home.
Her father explained that Rachel discovered an illegal acquisition network inside Brooks Global.
Victor was involved.
But not alone.
Michael had gathered evidence.
Rachel planned to expose everything.
Then someone learned.
The letter continued:
If Rachel dies, protect Ethan. Thomas must never learn the final truth until Rachel can tell him herself.
Ethan frowned.
“Thomas didn’t know?”
Sophia kept reading.
Then stopped.
“What?”
She handed him the page.
One sentence:
Ethan’s biological father is not the danger. The danger is why his identity was changed.
Ethan stared.
Identity changed?
Nathan examined the VHS.
“We need to digitize this.”
The hospital still possessed old media equipment in education services.
They played it.
Rachel appeared.
Alive.
Bruised from the crash.
But conscious.
Ethan’s knees weakened.
He had not heard his mother’s voice in twenty years.
“If you’re watching this, something has happened to me.”
She looked frightened.
“Victor Kane knows about Meridian.”
Ethan leaned forward.
Rachel continued:
“But Victor is not the person controlling it.”
Nathan froze.
Sophia whispered:
“Who is?”
Rachel looked directly into the camera.
“The person behind Meridian is—”
The footage distorted.
Static.
Then returned.
Rachel was crying.
“Ethan must never be told until Thomas understands.”
More static.
Then another voice appeared off-camera.
Male.
“Rachel, someone’s coming.”
Sophia froze.
“My father.”
Michael Reed.
Rachel stood.
The recording shook.
A door opened.
Then Rachel stared toward whoever entered.
Her expression changed completely.
Not fear.
Shock.
“You?”
The recording ended.
Nathan checked the tape.
“That section was physically erased.”
Ethan stared at the blank screen.
Someone had preserved the confession.
But removed only the identity.
Then Sophia noticed the timestamp.
“This recording wasn’t made after the crash.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Sophia pointed.
“The date.”
May you like
It was three days before Rachel Brooks’s crash.
Evelyn had lied.
