Chapter 14 - The Man Beside Ethan
Nathan did not move.
Ethan stared at him.
“No.”
Evelyn opened the file.
Nathan Cole had been twenty-eight when Rachel died.
A junior attorney working under Thomas Brooks.
He had access to signatures.
Corporate accounts.
Hospital legal records.
And Rachel’s investigation.
Nathan looked almost peaceful.
“You should sit down, Ethan.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Tell me she’s wrong.”
Nathan said nothing.
Sophia whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Evelyn explained.
Nathan discovered Rachel intended to expose not only Victor and Gabriel but an illegal offshore structure Nathan himself had created.
Nathan originally designed the accounts to conceal Thomas’s payments to Gabriel.
Then he began skimming them.
Rachel found out.
She planned to report everyone.
Nathan paid the mechanic to disable her car.
But Rachel survived the crash.
So Nathan followed her to St. Mary’s.
Michael helped Rachel record evidence.
Nathan arrived before police.
Victor arrived too.
That was why Evelyn remembered Victor.
But Victor had not killed Rachel.
Nathan had manipulated medication orders through Denton.
Ethan looked at the man who had advised him for nine years.
“You killed my mother.”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“I was twenty-eight.”
“That’s your defense?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I panicked.”
Ethan moved toward him.
Sophia caught Ethan’s arm.
Not because Nathan deserved protection.
Because Ethan deserved not to destroy himself.
Nathan continued.
“Thomas discovered what I did years later.”
“And?”
“He was going to expose me.”
Ethan understood.
“My father.”
Nathan nodded.
“You killed him too.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No dramatic denial.
Just yes.
Ethan’s knees almost weakened.
The man who killed both parents had sat beside him for years.
Approved contracts.
Attended funerals.
Protected him legally.
Why?
Nathan answered before Ethan asked.
“Guilt.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You expect that to matter?”
“No.”
Nathan looked at him.
“After Thomas died, I promised myself I would keep you alive.”
“You don’t get credit for protecting the orphan you created.”
Nathan lowered his head.
Federal investigators approached.
Then Victor suddenly said:
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
Nathan looked frightened for the first time.
Victor pointed at him.
“Ask him why Rachel’s original recording was erased.”
Ethan stared.
Nathan had confessed.
What else remained?
Victor continued:
“Rachel didn’t only name Nathan.”
Nathan whispered:
“Stop.”
Victor smiled.
“She named someone else.”
Gabriel moved toward the door.
Investigators blocked him.
Ethan turned.
“Gabriel?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Your mother discovered Gabriel knew the sabotage was planned.”
Silence.
Gabriel said:
“I didn’t order it.”
“No,” Nathan replied.
“You just let it happen.”
Ethan stared at his biological father.
Gabriel had known Rachel was in danger.
And remained silent because her death strengthened his future ownership claim.
Nathan had caused the crash.
Gabriel could have prevented it.
Victor had covered financial crimes afterward.
Thomas discovered pieces too late.
Every powerful man around Rachel had failed her differently.
Ethan looked around the boardroom.
Then made his decision.
“I don’t want this company.”
Everyone froze.
Gabriel almost smiled.
Ethan continued:
“Not like this.”
He placed his voting proxy on the table.
“I’m suspending the board and requesting independent federal oversight until every claim connected to Rachel Brooks, Gabriel Mercer, Thomas Brooks, and Meridian North is investigated.”
Victor shouted:
“You’ll destroy Brooks Global!”
Ethan looked at him.
“Then we rebuild something worth owning.”
Sophia watched him.
For the first time since learning who Eli really was, she smiled.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Ethan.”
He turned.
“There’s one thing Rachel never told any of them.”
She reached inside the hospital file.
A sealed envelope.
On it was Rachel’s handwriting.
FOR ETHAN AND SOPHIA TO OPEN TOGETHER.
Sophia stepped closer.
Ethan broke the seal.
Inside was not a confession.

And the name written beneath CHILD made both of them stop breathing.
