Chapter 11 - The Blackout

Emergency lights turned the corridor red.

Patients shouted.

Monitors switched to backup power.

Sophia immediately became a nurse again.

“Stay here.”

She ran toward her patients.

Ethan followed.

Not as a billionaire.

As Eli.

He helped move equipment.

Held a flashlight while Sophia checked oxygen lines.

Guided frightened visitors toward stairwells.

For ten minutes, there was no mystery.

Only people needing help.

Then backup systems stabilized.

Sophia found Ethan near Room 417.

“You stayed.”

“Where else would I go?”

She looked at him differently.

Then Ethan noticed something.

The room had been searched.

Mattress displaced.

Drawers emptied.

Someone had used the blackout.

On the floor lay Evelyn’s old photograph.

Rachel.

Michael.

Victor.

But the back had been peeled apart.

Something had been hidden inside.

A tiny key.

Number 608.

Nathan traced it to a private safe-deposit facility.

Ethan, Sophia, Nathan, and two federal investigators went together.

Box 608 contained no money.

Only Rachel’s original handwritten ledger.

And a DNA report.

Ethan stared at it.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.98%.

Gabriel Mercer.

Confirmed.

He had his answer.

But beneath it was another test.

Sophia Reed.

Relationship analysis.

Ethan frowned.

“Why did my mother test Sophia?”

Sophia took the page.

Then went still.

Half-sibling probability.

Extremely high.

Neither spoke.

Nathan read the report twice.

“This says—”

“I know what it says,” Sophia snapped.

Ethan stepped away.

Impossible.

If Gabriel Mercer was Ethan’s father…

And Sophia shared a biological parent with Ethan…

Then either Gabriel was also Sophia’s father.

Or Rachel was Sophia’s mother.

Sophia shook her head.

“My mother gave birth to me.”

That left Gabriel.

Michael Reed had raised another man’s daughter.

Sophia sat down.

“No.”

Ethan understood.

Every revelation seemed designed to erase another parent.

Then the facility door opened.

Michael Reed walked inside.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

Sophia stood.

Twenty-two years of grief appeared on her face at once.

Michael whispered:

“Sophie.”

She slapped him.

Then hit his chest.

Then collapsed against him sobbing.

“You were alive!”

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive!”

Michael held her.

Ethan watched silently.

Eventually Sophia stepped back.

“Is Gabriel my father?”

Michael looked toward Ethan.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Sophia held up the DNA report.

“Then explain this.”

Michael answered:

“The test is real.”

“Then how—”

“You and Ethan share a mother.”

Ethan stared.

Michael continued:

“Rachel Brooks gave birth to both of you.”

Sophia whispered:

“My mother—”

“The woman who raised you was your mother in every way that mattered.”

“But Rachel?”

Michael nodded.

“Biologically.”

Ethan’s mind raced.

Sophia was thirty.

Ethan thirty-six.

Rachel had given birth to Sophia six years after Ethan.

While married to Thomas Brooks.

Sophia asked the question nobody wanted.

“Who is my father?”

May you like

Michael closed his eyes.

“Victor Kane.”
