Chapter 8 - The Viral Hero

I called Daniel.
“Did you release footage?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Serena’s team was preparing their own clip.”
“Who authorized you?”
“No one.”
“Then why?”
“To protect you.”
I closed eyes.
Same disease.
Protection without consent.
“What was Serena’s team preparing?”
“A video framing you as an unstable billionaire who impersonated household staff to torment future daughter-in-law.”
Probably true in part.
“And your solution was propaganda?”
“To get ahead.”
“That is not your job.”
“It is literally reputation security.”
“No. Physical/corporate security.”
He was silent.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“Take down.”
“Copies everywhere.”
Of course.
Internet.
Too late.
Then edited clip spread.
Headlines:
BILLIONAIRE DISGUISES HIMSELF AS SERVANT, CATCHES GOLD DIGGER.
People loved simple morality.
Serena received threats.
That was unacceptable.
I issued public statement:
The circulating video is incomplete. Ms. Cross and others are subjects of ongoing private corporate/trust disputes. I do not condone harassment. My decision to enter my son’s home in disguise was mine, and my son did not consent.
PR team hated.
Good.
Then I suspended Daniel pending review for unauthorized release.
That hurt.
He had served me twenty years.
But ordinary rules.
He accepted.
Independent security chief appointed temporarily.
Then Serena.
She called me directly despite counsel advice.
“People are threatening me.”
“I issued statement.”
“You ruined my life.”
“You participated in scheme.”
“And you made spectacle.”
“The footage was released without my permission.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
I understood why she wouldn't believe.
Then:
“Did you ever love Ethan?”
“Yes.”
“Then why use him?”
“Because I spent thirty years watching rich people use everyone else and call it strategy.”
Not excuse.
“I wanted one turn.”
There.
Class resentment.
Ambition.
Then:
“Why servants?”
She went quiet.
“What?”
“You were cruel to staff before you knew me.”
She answered:
“Because my mother cleaned houses.”
Unexpected.
“She spent twenty-five years being invisible. I swore nobody would look at me that way.”
“So you looked at others that way first.”
“Yes.”
She began crying.
Not redemption.
Insight.
Then:
“My mother would hate who I became.”
Probably.
Then she said:
“I’ll testify.”
“Do it for truth, not me.”
“I’m not doing anything for you.”
Fair.
Then Rebecca.
Board investigation uncovered more.
She had genuinely believed Meridian Vector divestiture good.
She commissioned external valuation suggesting $900 million standalone value, while Vale internal accounting carried much lower implicit value.
If she openly proposed spinout, she might have been right.
But related investment interests meant conflict.
She hid.
Why?
She assumed I would reject due control.
Again secrecy born from distrust.
Then emails:
Rebecca to Warren:
Malcolm equates disagreement with betrayal.
Warren:
Often.
Ouch.
Then:
We cannot win governance fight honestly.
That was where they crossed.
Could they have?
Maybe.
Board had independent directors.
They could have tried.
They chose manipulation.
Then Dr. Kent.
Licensing review found he did not falsify a diagnosis exactly; he wrote “preliminary concern” based on collateral reports without clearly stating he had never examined me in header, though body noted indirect basis. Lucas/Serena presented it more definitively.
He had poor judgment/conflict due fee, but not necessarily criminal.
Different culpability.
Then Lucas.
He knowingly formed Cross Meridian and concealed purpose from Ethan.
He received money.
But he claimed Serena told him Ethan approved eventual trustee role.
Messages contradicted partially.
Civil fraud/misrepresentation exposure.
Then Warren.
He had designed plan around trust mechanics.
Why?
Money and revenge.
He believed I destroyed his career unfairly eleven years earlier.
I reopened termination file.
I fired him because he failed to disclose his wife’s ownership in vendor bidding for Vale contract.
He claimed I never gave chance.
Actually he had been given internal hearing but I overruled recommendation for suspension and terminated.
Was I too harsh?
Maybe.
Vendor had not won contract.
Conflict disclosed late.
I chose maximum.
Warren’s resentment had root.
Doesn't justify.
But pattern:
I used control decisively.
People learned challenging me dangerous.
Eleanor had warned.
Then Ethan said:
“Dad, maybe everyone is scared to disagree with you because you always think suspicion is wisdom.”
That hit.
“Sometimes suspicion is wisdom.”
“Sometimes it's just fear wearing expensive suit.”
Eleanor could have said.
Then trust review.
Ethan proposed:
replace my unilateral emergency suspension with three-person committee:
me,
independent fiduciary,
Ethan.
Any two.
For transactions over threshold.
Capacity disputes require independent medical panel, no family-supplied unilateral declarations.
Trustee replacement requires enhanced process.
This was better governance.
It reduced my power and strengthened protection.
I approved drafting.
Rachel smiled:
“You’re voluntarily giving up control?”
“Don't sound shocked.”
“I’m attorney. I document miracles.”
Then board made similar reforms at Vale Meridian:
independent chair.
separation CEO/chair? I was chair, CEO professional? Let's say I had remained executive chair. I stepped back to nonexecutive chair pending succession.
Rebecca’s argument, stripped of corruption, contained lesson.
Then Daniel review.
He violated policy releasing footage.
I could fire.
Independent panel recommended formal reprimand, temporary suspension, loss of discretionary PR authority, retention due otherwise strong record.
I followed.
When Daniel returned, he said:
“You could have fired.”
“Yes.”
“Why not?”
“Because independent review didn’t recommend.”
He smiled.
“Who are you?”
Learning.
Then one final development.
Forensic audit of Ardent Coast found Rebecca was not sole beneficial owner.
She owned 40%.
Another 60% held by a family trust.
Whose?
Eleanor Vale’s charitable trust.
My dead wife’s trust had unknowingly financed part of Rebecca’s plan.
How?
Someone had redirected its investment allocation years earlier.
The trustee responsible?
Me.
My signature was real.
May you like
I had approved investment without reading underlying beneficial structure.
Now the scandal led back to me.
