Chapter 7 - Eleanor’s Credentials

Dead credentials should not work.
They did not fully.
The transfer failed final approval precisely because Northbridge’s updated controls recognized Eleanor Vale as deceased and required secondary authorization.
But an internal instruction had been initiated using an archived family-office credential tied to her.
That meant someone had access to legacy systems.
Rebecca knew them.
So did Warren.
So did several former executives.
But Eleanor’s credentials carried emotional significance.
Whoever chose them wanted the transfer to appear connected to old family authority.
Or simply found dormant permissions.
Forensic investigation began.
I left Ethan’s house that night.
No argument.
No ownership flex.
The property belonged to Ethan outright.
I had gifted it four years earlier.
I stayed at hotel.
For first time in years, my son would not answer call.
I sent one message:
You were right. I should not have entered your private life in disguise. I will not contact you again until you choose, except where legal/trust notices require.
Then stopped.
Hardest restraint of my life.
Meanwhile, Serena moved to Lucas’s apartment.
Engagement canceled.
She retained counsel.
No one arrested at gala.
Rebecca placed on administrative leave by Vale Meridian board pending investigation.
Warren’s consulting access revoked.
Dr. Kent referred to medical licensing review? Counsel reported questionable declaration to appropriate entities, but no immediate conclusion.
Then Eleanor credential.
IT forensic team discovered login originated from an old company laptop assigned to:
Ethan Vale.
My stomach dropped.
Could my son have initiated?
Device had been decommissioned three years earlier and stored in Vale Meridian executive archive.
Who accessed archive?
Badge records:
Rebecca Sloan.
Two IT technicians.
My security chief Daniel Mercer.
Daniel?
I stared at report.
Rachel said:
“Don’t jump.”
But suspicion hurts fastest when trust deepest.
Daniel had known disguise.
Evidence.
Every move.
Could he be part?
We interviewed through counsel.
Daniel did not flinch.
“I accessed archive at your request last month.”
“What request?”
“You asked me to recover Eleanor’s old estate correspondence.”
True.
I had.
“Laptop?”
“I removed drive for imaging.”
“Did you return?”
“Yes.”
Logs confirmed.
Then one IT technician accessed after Rebecca requested “historic strategy files.”
Other technician did routine inventory.
Could be Rebecca.
But authentication token from Eleanor credential had been exported six years earlier.
Who exported?
Daniel’s predecessor.
At Eleanor’s instruction.
Why?
She had created emergency continuity file before death.
Of course.
Eleanor was meticulous.
Maybe transfer wasn't attack.
We found her letter.
If Malcolm becomes incapacitated and Ethan lacks experience, these credentials may be used only to initiate, never finalize, asset-preservation transfers with independent trustee approval.
So old credential intentionally remained limited.
Someone discovered.
Then Novaris escrow transfer.
Initiator IP:
Vale Meridian headquarters.
User terminal:
Rebecca Sloan's executive office.
That was strong.
She denied personal use.
Her assistant had access.
Security camera showed Rebecca inside office at timestamp.
Evidence mounting.
Then why $38 million?
The amount corresponded to proposed purchase of 42% stake in Meridian Vector spinout.
This was coup financing.
They were attempting use Vale family investment vehicle to fund buyer transaction involving our own asset.
Circular.
If completed, family money would finance sale of family asset to entity partly benefiting Rebecca’s network.
Serious conflict.
Northbridge stopped.
No money lost.
Then Serena’s cooperation.
Her attorney contacted Rachel.
She wanted deal in civil claims and was willing to testify about Rebecca.
I said:
“Not my decision on criminal matters.”
Correct.
But we could negotiate trust/company claims separately.
Serena provided messages.
Rebecca:
After wedding, get Ethan comfortable signing approvals.
Serena:
He asks too many questions.
Rebecca:
That’s why Malcolm must be sidelined first.
Then:
Do not hurt him. We need his incapacity, not death.
Again nonviolent.
Then Serena wrote:
What if Malcolm refuses doctor?
Rebecca:
Family observations can trigger independent assessment.
So Kent declaration was seed, not final.
Then one message shocked me.
Serena:
Ethan might choose his father over me.
Rebecca:
Then make him believe Malcolm already chose company over him.
My disguise gave her perfect ammunition.
I had done Rebecca’s work for her.
Then Ethan finally called after eight days.
“Dad.”
“Yes.”
“Did Mom know you would ever do something like this?”
Disguise?
“No.”
“Would she approve?”
I thought.
“No.”
He exhaled.
“Good.”
Then:
“I don’t need you to pretend it was justified.”
“I won't.”
“Were you right about Serena?”
“Yes.”
“Doesn’t make you right about me.”
“No.”
Silence.
Then:
“I want meeting.”
“Whenever.”
“But no lawyers first hour.”
Risky but personal.
“Okay.”
We met in public park.
Ethan said:
“You thought I was too stupid to see.”
“No.”
“You disguised yourself because you didn't trust judgment.”
“Yes.”
He looked.
“Thank you for saying.”
Then:
“I did sign $2.4 million investment.”
“I know.”
“I was careless.”
“Yes.”
He frowned.
“Could soften.”
“I’m learning slowly.”
He almost smiled.
Then:
“I thought Lucas’s firm was tax office. Serena lied.”
“Yes.”
“Would you have stopped me if I knowingly wanted transfer trust?”
“Depends.”
“Wrong answer.”
He was right.
“It's your beneficial interest. Within trust terms, I should advise, not own decision.”
“Better.”
Then:
“I want trust changed.”
My chest tightened.
“What change?”
“I want your unilateral suspension authority reduced.”
After what just happened?
My instinct screamed no.
Then Eleanor’s voice in memory:
Don’t let wealth turn him into victim.
If I refused because he was deceived once, I would prove Rebecca’s monarchy argument.
So I said:
“Let’s review with independent counsel.”
Ethan stared.
“You’d consider?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I also want Serena nowhere near it.”
Good.
Then his phone rang.
Lauren? Not. Daniel.
Ethan answered.
Face changed.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“Dad, someone just leaked the gala footage.”
Online?
Yes.
Video of billionaire disguised as servant exposing gold-digger fiancée.
Exactly simplified story.
It was going viral.
But clip had been edited.
It showed Serena humiliating me.
My reveal.
My accusation.
It cut out my admission that I had wronged Ethan.
It made me look flawless.
Someone wanted public sympathy on my side.
Who?
The upload originated from an account controlled by Vale Meridian PR contractor.
Authorized by Daniel Mercer.
May you like
My security chief had released it.
Without my permission.
