Chapter 5 - The Champagne Tower

At 8:06 p.m., Serena stood beside champagne tower wearing satin and certainty.
Three hundred? Prompt says wealthy guests maybe 200? Let's use 180. But user says no exact maybe.
One hundred eighty guests.
Executives.
Investors.
Family.
Friends.
Several Vale Meridian board members.
Perfect audience.
Dangerous audience.
Ethan moved through room politely but distant.
Serena noticed.
She drank faster.
I carried tray.
Lucas saw me and snapped:
“Hey, old man. More champagne.”
I obeyed.
Rebecca did not look at me twice.
That hurt strangely.
Sixteen years and she did not recognize my posture under costume.
Or perhaps she simply never looked at staff.
Eleanor would have noticed.
Then Serena humiliated a young server for setting forks wrong.
“After tonight, I’m replacing every servant in this house.”
She looked directly at me.
“Starting with you.”
Guests nearby laughed nervously.
I said nothing.
She stepped closer.
“You've been creeping around for days.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Take those ridiculous glasses off when I speak to you.”
The moment had arrived almost without planning.
I looked straight into her eyes.
“Will you?”
Her smile flickered.
“What?”
“Will you replace every servant?”
“Excuse me?”
I set tray down.
Then I removed glasses.
Lucas squinted.
I straightened my back.
Serena’s face changed before wig came off.
Recognition is strange.
People know body before mind.
I peeled away gray wig.
The ballroom went silent.
Someone gasped.
Lucas whispered:
“Oh God.”
Ethan stared.
Not shocked by who I was alone.
Hurt.
“Dad?”
That word mattered most.
I turned to him.
“I’m sorry.”
He took one step back.
“You were here?”
“For three days.”
“You spied on me?”
“Yes.”
The room heard.
I would not sanitize.
Serena recovered first.
“This is insane.”
“Yes,” I said. “It was.”
That surprised her.
“I should have told Ethan sooner.”
My son’s anger remained.
Good.
He deserved it.
Then Serena shouted:
“He disguised himself as staff to test me!”
“I came because I was concerned. What I found will be evaluated independently.”
Rebecca moved toward exit.
Daniel’s security team did not block.
Important.
This was not kidnapping.
But Rachel Black entered through ballroom doors with two representatives from Northbridge Fiduciary and Vale Meridian’s independent audit counsel.
Black folder in hand.
Not JAG.
Not police.
Lawyers and fiduciaries.
Rachel said:
“Ms. Sloan, before you leave, you should know company systems under preservation notice must not be altered. You are free to go, but document-destruction obligations have been served electronically.”
Rebecca stopped.
Her face changed.
Serena pointed at me.
“He’s threatening everyone.”
“No.”
I opened servant jacket and pulled a black folder.
“I’m documenting.”
Then I looked at Ethan.
“Your money was transferred into Cross Meridian without accurate disclosure of its intended trustee function.”
Serena interrupted.
“He signed.”
“Yes. That is why we investigate rather than pretend he is helpless.”
Ethan looked at me.
That helped.
I would not infantilize him to defeat Serena.
Then I continued.
“Dr. Harold Kent prepared a capacity declaration concerning me.”
Kent tried to disappear behind guests.
“I have never met Dr. Kent.”
Whispers.
Kent said:
“I relied on collateral reports.”
“From whom?”
He didn't answer.
Rachel did.
“Lucas Cross and Rebecca Sloan.”
Serena went pale.
Then I placed copies of emails on table, screens blurred to guests.
No public reading of every accusation.
“Northbridge has suspended consideration of trustee changes pending independent review.”
Serena laughed nervously.
“You think that freezes us?”
“No.”
Then I said line from prompt:
“My signature can freeze every dollar you planned to steal.”
Technically need nuance. Better:
“My signature, together with Northbridge’s authority, can stop discretionary trust transfers while disputed instructions are reviewed.”
Less viral but grounded.
Serena’s mouth tightened.
I added:
“And I signed that suspension this afternoon.”
Lucas stepped back.
Rebecca stared.
Then Ethan turned to Serena.
“Five million.”
She froze.
“What?”
He had heard?
Apparently yes.
“Rebecca promised you five million after trustee replacement?”
Serena looked toward Rebecca.
There.
Too obvious.
Ethan’s face collapsed.
“You were paid to marry me?”
“No.”
“Then answer.”
“I love you.”
“That wasn’t question.”
Silence.
Then ballroom doors opened again.
Daniel entered with a woman I did not know.
Serena knew her.
She whispered:
“No.”
The woman was brunette, late thirties.
Daniel said:
“Malcolm, this is Claire Donovan.”
Serena backed away.
Claire looked at her.
Then at Ethan.
“I was Serena Cross’s business partner for four years.”
Serena shouted:
“She’s lying!”
Claire held a sealed flash drive and corporate records.
Then said:
“I’m the person Serena asked to hide the first payment from Rebecca Sloan.”
May you like
The five-million deal had not started with Ethan.
Serena had been taking money before she ever met him.
