Chapter 9 - The Bennett File
Thomas closed the laptop.
“No.”
Claire stared.
“You know what he means.”
Her father’s silence betrayed him.
“Dad.”
Thomas sat down.
Northstar’s most valuable record wasn’t a child.
It was Claire Bennett.
Her genetic profile contained an unusual immune trait.
Not miraculous.
Not a cure.
But scientifically valuable enough that Arthur’s foundation had spent years studying related family lines.
Thomas discovered Claire’s childhood sample had been used repeatedly without authorization in commercial research.
Patent applications.
Drug-development partnerships.
Licensing deals.
Northstar earned millions.
Claire herself received nothing.
Worse, some patent claims depended on consent forms Thomas believed had been forged.
Claire understood.
“My pregnancy isn’t the asset.”
“No.”
“I am.”
“Yes.”
The baby created leverage.
Pregnancy made Claire medically vulnerable.
Fearful.
Easier to isolate.
If Northstar could portray her as unstable, obtain emergency guardianship, or pressure her into signing documents, they could regain control over access to her medical data and samples.
Claire looked at Ryan.
“You told people I was unstable.”
His face collapsed.
He had unknowingly been building Northstar’s case.
Or perhaps not unknowingly enough.
“Who told you to?”
Ryan whispered:
“Dr. Vale.”
He had met Vale privately after Claire’s second miscarriage.
Vale told him Claire had developed severe prenatal paranoia.
When she became pregnant again, he warned Ryan to document “episodes.”
Then came Thomas’s letters.
Ryan became convinced Claire was endangered and unstable.
But the chain?
The starvation?
The humiliation?
Those were Ryan.
He admitted it.
“I was angry.”
Claire stared.
“At me?”
“At everything.”
“So you punished the person who couldn’t fight back.”
Ryan began crying.
“Yes.”
It was the first honest confession.
It did not earn forgiveness.
Thomas asked for Ryan’s phone.
The humiliating recordings mattered.
Ryan believed they incriminated him.
They did.
But they also proved Claire was coherent while restrained and deprived of basic care.
They contradicted any claim that she was freely receiving treatment.
Claire had deliberately put the chain into frame.
Evidence.
Her survival instinct had created the strongest record in the house.
Melissa whispered:
“She knew.”
Claire looked at her.
“You noticed.”
“That’s why I gave you the phone.”
“Why did Ryan expect it?”
Ryan answered.
“Because I saw you watching Melissa.”
He anticipated betrayal.
He wanted to learn who Melissa would call.
So he allowed her access to the phone.
But the incoming call from Thomas surprised him.
Two people setting traps inside the same bathroom.
Neither controlling what came next.
Then police took Ryan aside.
Claire did not stop them.
He looked at her once.
“I did love you.”
Claire answered:
“Maybe.”
His face crumpled.
“But love without safety isn’t enough.”
He left in handcuffs.
Melissa watched her brother go.
Then Sarah noticed something on the newborn’s bracelet.
Tiny lettering.
Not NV-04.
MV-04.
Marianne Vale.
Everyone turned toward Marianne.
She went still.
Sarah whispered:
“This isn’t Northstar.”
Thomas stared at Marianne.
“What did you do?”
Marianne looked at the baby.

“I brought her here.”
