Chapter 1 - The Call in the Bathroom

By the time Claire learned how far the chain could reach, she had stopped measuring time in hours.

She measured it in sounds.

Ryan’s footsteps.

The refrigerator opening downstairs.

Melissa’s nervous laugh.

The click of the bathroom lock.

And the scrape of steel against tile whenever Claire moved her swollen ankle.

She was eight months pregnant, exhausted and painfully thirsty. Ryan had spent days convincing everyone around him that his wife was unstable, that she had become impossible during pregnancy, that keeping her isolated was somehow for her own good.

But nobody who saw the chain could believe that lie.

That was why Ryan normally hid it from cameras.

Until humiliation became more important than caution.

“Look at me.”

Claire raised her head.

Ryan stood above her with his phone recording.

Melissa leaned against the bathroom doorway.

She was smiling.

But Claire had started noticing things.

Melissa’s smile disappeared whenever Ryan turned away.

Her fingers trembled.

And twice, when Ryan ordered Claire to do something degrading, Melissa had looked physically sick.

Ryan grabbed Claire’s hair and forced her face toward the toilet.

“Drink.”

Claire pulled away, crying.

“Please.”

“Drink.”

Melissa laughed.

Too loudly.

Like someone performing.

Claire looked at her.

Melissa looked away.

Minutes later, Claire collapsed against the wall.

Ryan crouched beside her and pushed the camera toward her face.

“Anything to say?”

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she slowly shifted her leg.

The chain entered the frame.

Ryan immediately lowered the phone.

His smile vanished.

That reaction mattered.

Claire memorized it.

Evidence frightened him.

Then footsteps sounded somewhere downstairs.

Ryan glanced toward the hallway.

Melissa moved.

Fast.

She dropped beside Claire and slipped Ryan’s phone into her hand.

“Call your dad.”

Claire stared at her.

“What?”

“Your father. Call him.”

Claire almost laughed.

“My father is dead.”

Melissa’s face drained of color.

“No.”

Claire stared.

“What do you mean, no?”

CLICK.

The bathroom door locked.

Ryan stood against it.

Smiling.

“Perfect.”

Melissa spun around.

“You knew?”

Ryan nodded.

The phone suddenly rang in Claire’s hand.

UNKNOWN CALLER.

Melissa whispered:

“Don’t answer.”

Ryan crouched beside Claire.

“Answer it.”

Claire’s shaking finger touched the screen.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man whispered:

“Claire?”

Her entire body stiffened.

She knew that voice.

Impossible.

“Dad?”

Melissa covered her mouth.

Ryan stopped smiling.

The man continued:

“Claire, listen carefully. Ryan must never know the baby is—”

Ryan ripped the phone away.

“WHO IS THIS?”

The call ended.

Claire stared at him.

For the first time since her captivity began, Ryan looked genuinely frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

Then Claire noticed Melissa.

She wasn’t staring at Ryan.

She was staring at Claire’s stomach.

And whispering:

“Oh God.”

Claire grabbed her wrist.

“What does he think my baby is?”

Melissa began crying.

Before she could answer, someone knocked three times on the bathroom window.

They were on the second floor.

All three froze.

Another three knocks.

May you like

Ryan whispered:

“He found us.”
