Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Chose Claire

Evelyn Hale had adored Claire from the beginning.
That suddenly felt terrifying.
When Ryan first brought Claire home, Evelyn hugged her before they had even been introduced properly.
“You’re exactly what I hoped for.”
Claire had assumed she meant Ryan finally found a good woman.
Now the sentence sounded different.
Melissa sat on the floor.
“My mother knows your father?”
Claire handed her the photograph.
Melissa’s expression changed.
“I’ve seen this place.”
“Where?”
“That building behind them.”
It was a brick medical facility.
No sign visible except part of a blue symbol near the entrance.
Melissa recognized it from childhood.
The Hale family had donated money to a private reproductive medicine foundation called Northstar Institute.
Ryan’s grandfather, Arthur Hale, had been one of its founders.
Claire looked at Ryan.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You lie every time you breathe.”
“I knew my grandfather funded clinics. That’s it.”
Melissa suddenly laughed bitterly.
“Tell her about the basement.”
Ryan went still.
Claire stared.
“What basement?”
Their childhood home had a locked archive room.
Evelyn prohibited both children from entering.
At seventeen, Melissa found the key.
Inside were hundreds of medical files.
Not patient names.
Numbers.
Family trees.
Photographs.
Pregnancy records.
One file had a photograph of Thomas Bennett.
Claire’s father.
Another had Claire.
Age six.
Claire stopped breathing.
“You saw my picture?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know you then.”
Years later, when Ryan brought Claire home, Melissa recognized her.
She confronted Evelyn.
Her mother claimed Claire’s childhood medical records existed because Thomas participated in a hereditary disease study.
Melissa believed her.
Until Claire became pregnant.
Then Evelyn became obsessed.
She asked about ultrasounds.
Blood tests.
Due date.
Whether the baby was male or female.
Claire remembered.
At the time, she thought Evelyn was simply an excited grandmother.
Then something else surfaced.
Evelyn had insisted Claire use a specific obstetrician.
Dr. Martin Vale.
Claire had refused because she liked her existing doctor.
Evelyn became furious.
Three days later, Claire’s doctor abruptly transferred her care because of an alleged insurance issue.
Dr. Vale became her physician anyway.
Claire’s hand moved protectively across her stomach.
“What did they do to me?”
Ryan shook his head.
“Nothing.”
“You don’t know that.”
“No.”
The honesty surprised her.
Then someone unlocked the bathroom door from outside.
All three stared.
Ryan had the only key.
Or thought he did.
The door opened.
Evelyn Hale stood there.
Sixty-three.
Elegant.
Perfectly composed.
She looked at Claire chained beside the toilet.
Then at Ryan.
And slapped her son across the face.
“You idiot.”
Ryan staggered.
“You told me to keep her here.”
“I told you not to let her leave the property.”
“You said she was in danger.”
“She was.”
Evelyn looked at the chain.
“I never told you to do this.”
Claire laughed weakly.
“So everyone is protecting me while nobody asks what I want.”
Evelyn’s face softened.
“I’m sorry.”
“Take this off.”
Evelyn picked up the key thrown through the window.
She unlocked Claire’s ankle.
Ryan stared.
“Mom.”
“Move.”
Then Evelyn crouched beside Claire.
“Your father is alive.”
Claire began crying.
“Why?”
“Because six years ago Thomas discovered what Northstar had done.”
“To whom?”
Evelyn looked at Claire’s stomach.
“To you.”
Claire felt her baby move.
“What did they do?”
May you like
Evelyn answered quietly:
“They made sure Ryan would eventually meet you.”
