Emily was not physician.

Not because baby was abnormal.

The dramatic movements reflected fetus reacting during intermittent uterine tightening, while unusual placental blood-flow pattern distorted monitoring.
Claire and baby were stable.
But she required close observation.
Daniel stayed outside treatment room until Claire invited him.
“You don't get to make decisions for me.”
“I know.”
“No secret monitors.”
“I know.”
“No deciding what I can handle.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“And stop saying you know after you've already done it.”
Daniel nodded.
This time he said nothing.
Emily’s records then completed larger picture.

He feared public revelation would panic Claire during high-risk pregnancy.
So he covered Lily’s mouth.

Then Emily asked to see Ava.

She was Emily’s biological daughter.

Emily’s family.
