Chapter 1 - That’s Him

The ballroom had been designed to make powerful people feel untouchable.

Crystal chandeliers glowed above round tables covered in white linen. Champagne moved between investors, physicians, attorneys, and members of the wealthy Mercer family. At the center table sat Daniel Mercer and his wife, Claire.

Claire was eight months pregnant.

Daniel had spent the entire evening with one hand resting protectively against the back of her chair.

Then a seven-year-old girl walked between the tables.

Lily Dawson wore a burgundy dress and an expression too serious for a child.

She stopped.

Looked directly at Daniel.

Raised one trembling hand.

“That’s him!”

Every nearby conversation died.

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Claire instinctively wrapped both hands around her belly.

“Daniel?”

He stood too quickly.

“She doesn’t know what she’s saying!”

Lily flinched.

Vanessa Cole rose from another table and immediately stepped between them.

Vanessa was Lily’s maternal aunt. She had brought Lily to the charity dinner because Lily’s mother, Emily, had disappeared from public life nearly two years earlier after what the family described only as “a medical tragedy.”

Vanessa stared at Daniel.

“Then why are you scared of her?”

“I’m not.”

“You look terrified.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Lily kept pointing.

Then her eyes shifted.

Past Daniel.

To Claire’s stomach.

The girl’s hand slowly lowered.

“He told my mommy her baby died too.”

Claire stopped breathing for a second.

“What?”

Daniel turned white.

“Lily, that's enough.”

Claire stared at him.

“You knew her mother?”

Before he answered, Claire’s baby kicked violently.

The movement rippled beneath her gold satin dress.

Claire gasped.

Lily stepped closer.

Her expression changed from fear to recognition.

“That baby isn’t normal.”

“Lily—” Daniel snapped.

He lunged forward and covered her mouth.

Vanessa reacted instantly, knocking him away and pulling Lily against herself.

Claire cried out again.

Another powerful movement rolled beneath the satin.

She sank to the floor.

Guests recoiled.

For one impossible second, pressure beneath the fabric formed something resembling five tiny fingers.

A hand.

Claire stared downward in horror.

Lily began sobbing.

Vanessa held her.

Daniel looked more frightened than anyone.

Claire lifted her eyes.

“What does she know?”

Daniel said nothing.

Lily finally whispered:

May you like

“Mommy’s stomach did that the night he took her away.”

And Daniel’s silence became the first accusation.
