Chapter 13 - The Two Daughters
Sophie was born five weeks later.
Healthy.
Small.
Her heart rhythm required monitoring but stabilized.
Definitive DNA testing established Sophie and Lucy were monozygotic sisters originating from spontaneous split of same embryo.
Because they were transferred approximately four weeks apart and gestated in different women, physicians avoided casually calling them conventional twins.
Genetically, their near-identical origin was clear.
Legally and socially, circumstances were unprecedented.
Ethan refused let media turn them into spectacle.
Court sealed much of records to protect children.
Sarah participated in transition plan.
She had carried Lucy for nine months believing another family waited.
Her grief mattered.
Claire had carried Sophie.
Her violation mattered.
Ethan had been denied consent to second transfer.
His violation mattered.
Lucy and Sophie mattered most.
No adult got to turn them into evidence first and children second.
Then Dr. Martin Keene entered guilty plea to offenses tied unauthorized reproductive procedure, falsified medical consent, records manipulation and fraud, subject to exact jurisdictional charges.
He also faced licensing action.
His defense emphasized he believed preserving viable life was ethical.
Prosecutor response:
Preservation did not authorize transfer.
Outcome did not create retroactive consent.
Monica faced separate scrutiny for concealment and contract misrepresentation after learning truth.
Elaine Porter cooperated and was disciplined for failing verify extraordinary consent chain.
Natalie Price and Rebecca Sloan were treated based on evidence of what they actually knew.
Anna’s unauthorized portal access and medication release were reviewed separately.
Eleanor faced consequences for assaultive administration and shove leading to Claire's fall.
Claire did not ask authorities to minimize it.
“You were trying to save Sophie,” Ethan said once.
Eleanor corrected him.
“I was trying to control crisis.”
That was more accurate.
She had believed fetal medication urgent.
She still could have called ambulance.
She still could have respected Claire’s inability to swallow.
She still could have stopped when Anna warned.
Intent did not erase risk.
Then Ethan asked Eleanor the question he had avoided:
“When you said ‘there was never supposed to be a Baby B,’ did you wish Lucy didn't exist?”
Eleanor looked horrified.
“No.”
“You sounded like you did.”
“I meant transfer. Not child.”
“Lucy will one day read accounts of this.”
Eleanor went quiet.
Then:
“Then record exactly that I used terrible words.”
She wrote statement:
Baby B should never have been transferred without Ethan and Claire’s consent. Lucy herself is not a mistake.
Claire kept copy for future.
Then the empty vial was returned after evidence processing.
BABY A.
Ethan hated label.
Sophie had name now.
Lucy had name.
They placed vial in legal archive, not family keepsakes.
No child should grow up believing case code defined her.
The newborn cry behind mansion doors also lost supernatural power.
Lucy had simply been hungry.
Sarah had been feeding her in library when confrontation began.
The crash startled her.
She cried.
That was all.
There had been no third person making cry.
No recording.
No secret baby room.
Sarah had stayed hidden because Claire asked her not to reveal herself until Ethan arrived and attorneys could be contacted.
The double doors were closed to keep event guests? There were no party guests. To keep noise/privacy.
Then Claire finally told Ethan why she had hidden Sarah.
“I was afraid you'd immediately demand Lucy.”
“I might have.”
“I didn't want Sarah treated like criminal.”
“You still should have told me.”
“Yes.”
Marriage survived, but not untouched.
They agreed no more unilateral secrecy about children.
Then Detective Brooks delivered complete reconstruction.
Only one unresolved detail remained central:
Who first told Eleanor “Baby B” existed?
Melissa had contacted her.
But Melissa learned from Catherine.
Catherine learned from Sarah paperwork.
Sarah paperwork existed because Monica.
All trace back Martin.
So no hidden source.
Every chain closed.
And yet Michael Bennett’s name remained attached to Ethan's genetic-history file.
Brooks said:
“It may be unrelated clerical history.”
Ethan nodded.

He had learned.
