Claire recovered from fall.
She had bruising and concussion symptoms, but no placental abruption.
Sophie—Baby A—remained stable after proper fetal-arrhythmia treatment under specialists.
Eleanor had not poisoned her.
But she had administered an unsafe dose in an unsafe manner.
The distinction mattered legally and morally.
Anna visited Claire.
“I should have locked wheelchair.”
Claire shook head.
“You were trying to stop her.”
“I hit handle.”
“You didn't send me down hall intentionally.”
“No.”
“Then don't take Eleanor’s decision onto yourself.”
Anna cried.
Eleanor had shoved Anna toward wheelchair during struggle.
The impact released chair.
No one had intentionally launched Claire down hallway.
But Eleanor's aggression initiated chain.
Ethan’s house also failed basic safety: wheelchair brake mechanism worn, hallway slightly sloped from prior renovation, pedestal dangerously placed.
Those factors worsened accident.
No secret mechanism.
No remote control.
No hidden attacker.
One terrifying visual had ordinary physics.
Then Anna admitted her own wrongdoing.
She had infiltrated household intentionally after St. Catherine fired her.
She wanted watch Claire case.
She accessed medical portal without authorization.
She released draft medication order.
She had believed she was helping fetus.
She wasn't qualified.
Her action contributed to wrong vial arriving.
Claire said:
“You saved me from swallowing more.”
“Yes.”
“You also helped put it in house.”
“Yes.”
Both.
Anna would face professional/legal consequences separate from rescue.
Ethan respected honesty.
Then Catherine provided ethics timeline.
Baby B originated from same embryo as Baby A after spontaneous laboratory split.
Both were genetically Ethan/Claire.
Claire’s disposition form allowed preserving both pending consent.
Martin secretly arranged transfer of B to Sarah four weeks before A was transferred into Claire.
Wait timeline: Claire's current pregnancy 34 weeks, Sarah delivered at 38 weeks, Sarah transfer 4 weeks earlier than Claire. So Martin arranged B first, then A later. Claire consented to A transfer unaware B already implanted. Perfect.
Martin used falsified approvals.
Then when Claire came for A transfer, he knew another genetically identical embryo already growing in Sarah.
“There was never supposed to be a Baby B” from Eleanor referred to clinical plan: only A was authorized for transfer; B was to remain preserved pending consent.
Ironically, B was transferred first.
A later became Claire’s authorized pregnancy.
Labels were chronological inventory labels, not birth order.
This explained why newborn B existed before unborn A delivered.
They were not designated by birth timing.
Then Ethan asked why Martin risked Claire later transferring A if B already active.
Because clinic success statistics counted each transfer separately.
He wanted two live outcomes.
He assumed families might accept second child later or settlement could contain issue.
Arrogance.
Then financial records confirmed acquisition.
Threshold bonus paid after Sarah reached ongoing-pregnancy milestone? Could be live birth threshold not yet. Sarah's birth made threshold. Bonus escrow triggered then. Martin received scheduled bonus after birth, frozen once scandal. Motive clear.
Monica knew only late.
Elaine performed transfer relying on falsified consent.
Natalie generated audio under false training pretense.
Rebecca Sloan certified based on fake calls.
Daniel Reed shipped embryo based on authorization.
Each action formed chain.
Only Martin understood whole plan.
But he did not know Eleanor would force medicine.
He did not know Claire would hide Sarah in mansion.
He did not stage wheelchair accident.
This kept central mystery logical.
Then Ethan received court update.
Temporary genetic-parent recognition established for him and Claire while preserving Sarah’s standing for medical decision transition until final order.
Sarah said:
“I don't want to steal your daughter.”
Claire answered:
“And I don't want to erase the woman who carried her.”
No instant solution.
Then Claire asked Sarah:
“Did you know she had heart issue before birth?”
“Yes.”
“Did clinic tell you why?”
“They said family history.”
“What family history?”
Sarah produced confidential summary.
It referenced:
BENNETT CARDIAC VARIANT — PATERNAL LINE.
Ethan frowned.
His family had no known inherited arrhythmia.
Claire’s father had heart disease.
So “paternal line” looked wrong.
Was embryo parentage different?
DNA already confirmed Ethan and Claire.
Then genetic counselor corrected terminology.
In clinic software, “paternal line” referred embryo donor father: Ethan.
Variant testing showed Ethan carried it unknowingly.
He had no symptoms.
Not hidden paternity.
But report contained family-history attachment.
Patient:
MICHAEL BENNETT.
Ethan stared.
“I don't know anyone named Michael Bennett.”
A new mystery threatened too early.
