Chapter 7 - What happened after the twins were born
Rachel survived the night.
When she finally became stable enough to communicate, police kept the questions limited.
Her medical condition came first.
She asked about her children.
“All three are alive,” Brooks told her.
Rachel covered her face and cried.
Then Grace was allowed to see her.
The seven-year-old ran toward the bed.
“Mommy!”
Rachel could barely lift her arm.
Grace climbed carefully beside her.
“I did what you said.”
“I know.”
“I saved Noah and Emma first.”
Rachel sobbed.
“You saved all of us.”
Later, Rachel began telling investigators what happened.
Charles Whitmore had indeed been the twins’ father.
Their relationship had lasted nearly three years.
Complicated.
Secret.
Charles had told Rachel he was separated from his wife.
Whether that was completely true remained disputed.
But DNA later confirmed the twins were his.
Before Charles died, he had created a private trust for the unborn children.
Rachel knew about it.
Richard apparently learned about it too.
The trust was enormous.
Not because Charles intended to make infants extravagantly wealthy.
Because he feared his death.
Then came the boating accident.
Rachel stopped receiving calls.
An attorney who had contacted her disappeared from communication.
She moved.
Twice.
Black SUVs began appearing near her home.
After the twins were born, Rachel became seriously ill.
She initially believed it was exhaustion.
Then she worsened.
A woman who had assisted during the home birth gave her medication.
Rachel took it.
Within hours she could barely stand.
“Who was she?” Brooks asked.
Rachel whispered:
“I thought she was a nurse.”
She wasn’t.
Investigators traced the woman.
Her actual occupation stunned them.
She worked for a private medical contractor.
