Chapter 13 - The condition in the trust

Charles had known his family.

That was why he never gave Rachel direct control of forty million dollars.

Not because he distrusted her.

Because he knew wealth attracts predators.

The trust would pay for housing, education, healthcare, security, and long-term support.

Grace, Noah, and Emma would receive greater control only as adults.

But Charles included another instruction.

The rural property where Rachel lived was to be purchased by the trust.

Rachel stared at Samuel.

“Why?”

“Charles wanted to own the land around it.”

“For what?”

Samuel opened an old map.

The small house sat near hundreds of acres Richard’s companies had quietly attempted to acquire.

Charles had discovered something beneath the property.

Not oil.

Not minerals.

Records.

Decades-old environmental documents suggested one Whitmore company had improperly buried industrial waste on neighboring land years earlier.

Charles feared exposure could destroy the company.

Richard wanted the remaining parcels before independent testing could occur.

Rachel’s property gave investigators potential access to an important boundary area.

Suddenly the pressure on her house made even more sense.

The inheritance was only part of it.

Charles’s death.

Rachel’s intimidation.

The land.

The trust.

Old corporate secrets.

They were intertwined.

Environmental authorities became involved.

Testing began.

Richard’s problems multiplied.

But Rachel wanted no revenge empire.

She wanted safety.

She wanted Grace in school.

She wanted Noah and Emma healthy.

She wanted one full night of sleep without fearing headlights outside.

Samuel asked what she wanted to do with the trust’s housing provision.

Rachel looked toward Grace.

The child was pushing the repaired wheelbarrow slowly through the hospital courtyard.

Inside it were blankets.

No babies.

Just stuffed animals.

For once, she was using it for play.

Rachel smiled through tears.

“Somewhere with a yard.”

Samuel nodded.

“And?”

“Near this hospital.”

Sarah heard.

“Why?”

Rachel looked at her.

“Because my daughter walked all this way because she believed someone here would help her.”

Grace ran toward them.

“Mommy!”

May you like

Rachel opened her arms.

And for the first time, Grace ran into them without looking over her shoulder.
