Chapter 14 - The day they finally went home

Noah left intensive care first.
Emma followed twelve days later.
The hospital lined the hallway quietly.
No cameras.
No reporters.
Just doctors, nurses, technicians, receptionists, cleaners, security officers, and people who had watched three children fight their way back toward ordinary life.
Grace wore new red sneakers.
She still carried the old pieces of cloth that had once protected her blistered hands.
Sarah asked why.
Grace shrugged.
“So I remember.”
Rachel knelt.
“You don’t need to remember the pain.”
Grace looked at her mother.
“I want to remember I got there.”
Rachel could not answer.
Officer Brooks rolled the repaired wheelbarrow toward them.
A small brass plate had been attached beneath the handle.
Grace couldn’t read all the words yet.
Sarah read them quietly:
For Grace — who kept pushing.
Grace hugged Brooks.
Then Sarah.
Then Dr. Miller.
Their new home was modest.
Nothing resembling the Whitmore mansions.
Rachel chose it deliberately.
Three bedrooms.
A safe neighborhood.
A small backyard.
A school nearby.
The trust purchased it according to Charles’s instructions.
Grace immediately planted sunflowers.
The wheelbarrow became a garden tool again.
Exactly what it had been before the worst three days of her life.
The criminal and civil investigations continued.
Richard faced serious allegations connected to financial conduct, intimidation, and other evidence.
The circumstances surrounding Charles’s death remained under investigation rather than becoming an easy, dramatic conclusion.
Rachel accepted that truth sometimes arrives slowly.
Grace deserved something faster.
Childhood.
So Rachel gave it back wherever she could.
Birthday parties.
Pancakes.
Cartoons.
Muddy shoes.
Arguments over bedtime.
Ordinary things.
Then one afternoon, several months later, a package arrived.
No return address.
Rachel immediately called Brooks.
Police examined it before she opened anything.
Inside was a small digital storage device.
And a note.
Charles wasn’t alone on the boat.
Rachel stopped breathing.

Investigators recovered one video file.
The timestamp was from the night Charles died.
