Chapter 9 - The ransom that wasn't money

I expected a number.

He didn't ask for money.

“Bring me the urn.”

I stared at Willow's ashes above my fireplace.

“Why?”

“Tomorrow. Eleven a.m. Old Riverside warehouse.”

The line ended.

Brad went pale when I told him.

“What’s in the urn?”

“Ashes.”

“No.”

“What?”

He looked terrified.

“Willow hid something before the funeral.”

I remembered the sealed casket.

Cremation.

The urn delivered later.

Brad said Dr. Keene handled everything.

Keene had once told Willow that if she needed evidence protected, people rarely search what they believe belongs to the dead.

The urn had never been opened.

I felt sick doing it.

But with investigators present, we did.

Ashes.

Then beneath a false metal base:

A flash drive.

I stared.

Brad whispered:

“Oh God.”

The drive contained financial records.

Names.

Accounts.

Video.

Adrian Vale speaking with officials.

Judges.

Contractors.

Charity executives.

Evidence from Willow's old investigation.

Enough to reopen cases.

Enough to explain why Adrian tried to kill her.

Then one file carried my name.

Henry Harper.

I opened it.

Seven years of bank transfers.

My $40,000 payments.

Tracked.

Categorized.

Adrian's notes described them as:

Harper compliance payment.

Compliance?

I had never agreed to anything.

Then Lena found the explanation.

The money I sent Brad had been partially redirected into accounts controlled by Adrian.

I had unknowingly been funding the man who tried to kill my daughter.

Brad had been passing him money.

“Why?”

“Protection.”

I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I walked away.

My grief had been monetized from every direction.

Then Lena opened another file.

A photograph of Gloria.

My wife.

Taken three weeks after Willow's supposed death.

Meeting Alexandra Vale.

I stopped breathing.

Gloria had known more than the DNA report.

She had met Adrian's sister after the funeral.

Why?

Brad stared.

“I didn't know.”

For once, I believed him.

Then we found an audio recording.

Gloria's voice.

“If Henry learns Willow is alive, he'll destroy everything.”

Alexandra:

“Then keep him grieving.”

May you like

My wife had participated in the lie.

And suddenly Gloria's death six months later no longer looked like simple heartbreak.
