Chapter 10 - Gloria’s last six months

Gloria had not died merely because Willow was gone.

She had been carrying the secret.

I reopened her medical records.

Cardiac arrest.

No suspicious toxicology.

No evidence of foul play.

Important.

Grief, stress, heart disease.

All real.

But during those six months, Gloria met Alexandra four times.

Paid Dr. Keene twice.

Visited the farmhouse once.

Why?

Because Willow initially remembered me.

And wanted to come home.

Gloria stopped her.

That truth destroyed something in me.

My wife had decided I couldn't handle it.

Maybe she believed Adrian would kill Willow if I knew.

Maybe she was right.

Still.

She chose for me.

Then a second recording explained more.

Willow, confused and frightened:

“I want Dad.”

Gloria:

“Not yet.”

“Mom, please.”

“You don't understand what he'll do.”

There it was.

Everyone's version of love becoming control.

Brad.

Gloria.

Dr. Keene.

Alexandra.

Even Willow herself.

All deciding which truths I could survive.

Then Lena received a location ping from Noah's old tablet.

Industrial waterfront.

Same district as Adrian's warehouse.

Police prepared.

I wanted to go.

They refused.

Correctly.

This wasn't my raid.

It was my daughter inside.

That difference almost killed me.

The warehouse was empty when authorities entered.

Except for Dr. Keene.

Bound to a chair.

Alive.

He told investigators Adrian had moved Willow and Noah again.

Then looked at me.

“Henry.”

I nearly attacked him.

“You buried my daughter.”

“I saved her.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let Gloria die with this.”

His face crumpled.

“Yes.”

No defense.

Then he gave us a clue.

Adrian wasn't trying to flee.

He was trying to reach something Willow had hidden before the crash.

Not the flash drive.

Something else.

“Where?”

“Harper Family Market.”

My store.

My father's grocery.

Dr. Keene said Willow had hidden original evidence inside the building seven years ago because nobody connected her investigation to a neighborhood market.

I drove there with police.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Then I remembered the old freezer room.

Willow used to help me inventory after college.

Behind one loose wall panel was a metal box.

Inside:

Documents.

A key.

And a birth certificate.

Noah Vale Harper.

Father:

Adrian Vale.

Mother:

Willow Harper.

But beneath it was another certificate.

Ivy Harper.

Mother:

Willow Harper.

Father:

Blank.

Brad was not listed.

I stared at him.

“What is this?”

Brad's face collapsed.

May you like

He had raised Ivy for seven years.

But he wasn't her biological father either.
