Chapter 3 - The Call to Boston
I called her mother next.
Margaret answered on the first ring.
“Is Sarah with you?” I demanded.
Her voice turned cold instantly.
“You mean the wife you left alone with a newborn while you were never home?”
“I asked if she’s there.”
“And I asked if you’ve looked in the mirror lately.”
My jaw tightened.
“She emptied our accounts and disappeared with Ethan.”
Margaret gave a short, bitter laugh.
“Our accounts? Sarah worked sixty-hour weeks before that baby was born. She earned every penny she put into them.”
I stayed silent.
“No, Richard,” she said. “She isn’t here. But if she finally left you… I can’t honestly say I’m surprised.”
Then she hung up.
I stood there in the kitchen, gripping the phone so hard my hand shook.
Sarah had always been the quiet one. The forgiving one. The accommodating one.
But now her mother sounded less worried than relieved.
Like Sarah hadn’t made a reckless decision.
Like she had finally escaped something.
