Chapter 14 - The company in my name

The vendor was called Hale Medical Transit LLC.

I had never heard of it.

Registered in Delaware.

Mail forwarded through a Virginia office.

Bank account opened with copies of my old consulting credentials.

My identification had likely been taken from Vithera’s contractor files.

Over four years, Hale Medical Transit received $1.6 million.

Most money then flowed outward.

I had never seen a dollar.

The company existed to create a trail.

If the old freight fraud surfaced, records could point toward me.

Not Mariana.

Not Rodrigo.

Me.

Why?

Because I was the outside consultant who first questioned the invoices.

The easiest way to discredit a whistleblower is to make him part of the scheme.

I hadn’t even become a whistleblower.

I simply kept the papers.

Someone prepared anyway.

Who authorized the original vendor?

Not Rodrigo.

He had taken over that division later.

Approval signature:

Mariana Robles.

Before we married.

My stomach dropped.

She stared at the document.

“I didn’t sign this.”

At this point, forged signatures were almost ordinary.

But the date mattered.

Mariana had been a junior corporate communications analyst.

She had no vendor authority.

Someone used her credentials because we were dating.

That meant whoever built Hale Medical Transit knew our relationship.

Four years ago.

Celeste Warren had supervised Mariana then.

There.

Maybe.

Investigators dug.

The account creation IP came from a Vithera executive suite.

Celeste’s floor.

But shared network.

Still not enough.

Then Martin provided one final archive.

Old surveillance instructions.

Subject:

Consultant Ethan Hale.

Objective:

Map leverage points.

Personal relationship: Mariana Robles.

Potential pressure: career dependence.

Potential vulnerability: financial fatigue.

I read it twice.

They had studied us like variables.

And who signed the surveillance authorization?

Not Celeste.

Initials:

R.S.

Rodrigo Santillan.

He had targeted me before he began sleeping with my wife.

Maybe the affair was not the beginning.

Maybe it was another operation that became personal.

Mariana looked sick.

“He chose me because of you.”

“Maybe.”

“And then I…”

She couldn’t finish.

I did not comfort her.

Some truths have to sit where they land.

Then investigators found the earliest message.

Rodrigo to Martin:

Do not approach Hale directly. Watch the wife. If she moves up, he moves closer to us.

That was four years old.

Mariana’s promotion had always been part merit, part access.

Her career wasn’t fake.

But someone had exploited it.

Then she asked me:

“Was any of our life real?”

I knew the answer.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“The manipulation was real too.”

Both.

Always both.

Then Samuel entered.

“We found where the $1.6 million ultimately went.”

“Where?”

He placed the chart on the table.

Not Rodrigo.

Not Celeste.

Not Meridian.

The final recipient was a charitable foundation.

The Hale-Robles Community Trust.

Our surnames.

May you like

Created before we were married.

Neither of us had ever heard of it.
