Chapter 10 - The woman in the hotel

Her name was Chloe Mason.

Twenty-nine.

Event consultant.

Beautiful.

I had never met her.

Yet photographs found on Rodrigo’s laptop showed Chloe entering a hotel elevator with me.

At least it looked like me.

Same navy blazer.

Same hair.

Same build.

Face partially turned.

Timestamp from two weeks earlier.

I knew exactly where I had been that night.

Hospital logistics conference in Baltimore.

Same hotel.

Had someone followed me?

Yes.

Actual conference footage showed me entering the elevator.

Alone.

Chloe was digitally composited into later stills.

Not perfect.

But enough for gossip.

Then messages appeared.

Fake conversation between “me” and Chloe.

Romantic.

Explicit enough to imply affair.

Created using a spoofed number.

There was the plan.

Mariana cheats.

Divorce filed.

Then evidence appears that I cheated too.

Forged prenup activates.

Windfall or other extraordinary assets become divisible under a fabricated agreement.

But again—the lottery win happened after they built the mechanism.

What “extraordinary windfall” had they expected?

Samuel searched.

Then I remembered.

My employer had been negotiating a major equity payout.

Medical logistics acquisition.

If completed, my consulting options could be worth several million.

I told Mariana once.

Months ago.

She must have mentioned it to Rodrigo.

That was the original target.

Not eighty million.

Maybe four.

The lottery multiplied the stakes overnight.

That was why everything became frantic.

Then Mariana asked:

“Why forge my signature too?”

Samuel answered.

“To make the prenup look mutual.”

She looked sick.

Her affair partner had been planning to weaponize her marriage against both of us.

I expected satisfaction.

Instead, I felt tired.

Mariana looked at me.

“What happens to us?”

“Not today.”

“Ethan—”

“No.”

The conspiracy did not erase the kiss.

Manipulation did not erase choice.

She nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Lottery claims office.

The original ticket was in secure custody.

My signature verified.

Claim temporarily held pending standard fraud review because of the attempted competing representation.

But they believed ownership could be resolved.

Then the official said:

“Mr. Hale, there’s one additional issue.”

“What?”

“Someone purchased a second ticket at the same gas station.”

“So?”

“Same numbers.”

My heart stopped.

“Another winner?”

“No.”

He paused.

“The ticket was printed fourteen seconds after yours.”

Same numbers.

Impossible coincidence?

Not impossible.

But extraordinary.

May you like

And it had been purchased by Martin Alvarez.

Ruben.
