Chapter 12 - The woman they planned to blame

The new division would inherit problematic vendors.

Inflated contracts.

Questionable invoices.

And compliance certifications.

Mariana’s signature would appear on transition documents.

After the acquisition, if regulators noticed?

Perfect scapegoat.

Ambitious corporate-relations director.

Affair with vice president.

Secret consulting account holding $900,000.

A husband suddenly worth millions.

Narrative ready.

She looked at me.

“They were going to say I stole.”

“Yes.”

I knew the feeling of discovering your own life had been rewritten without permission.

For the first time since catching her with Rodrigo, I saw not my cheating wife.

A person being framed.

Both could be true.

I could help her expose it without saving our marriage.

That distinction mattered.

Mariana agreed to cooperate with investigators and Vithera’s independent board committee.

She turned over messages.

Calendar entries.

Personal devices.

No heroic immunity.

No promise of protection.

Just evidence.

Rodrigo’s messages revealed emotional manipulation.

But also genuine affection at times.

Messy.

Real.

That made it worse, not better.

People prefer villains who feel nothing.

Rodrigo apparently felt something for Mariana and still planned to use her.

Celeste’s involvement remained contested.

Then Mariana found one message from Rodrigo:

Once the pink car lands, Ethan looks unstable.

I froze.

The pink car.

They knew before delivery.

Claire Benton had shared my gift purchases after stealing the ticket.

Rodrigo realized the gifts could serve the narrative.

Lavish.

Impulsive.

Public.

He told employees to gather in the lobby.

That was why everyone had been filming before I reached the office.

They were primed.

Someone wanted video of my reaction.

If I screamed?

Perfect.

If I hit Rodrigo?

Even better.

If I humiliated Mariana publicly?

Evidence for divorce.

Instead, I stayed calm.

That ruined another layer.

Samuel smiled when he realized.

“The best thing you did yesterday was nothing.”

Funny.

For years, Mariana said I was too controlled.

Yesterday, control saved me.

Then Vithera’s board vote was canceled.

Acquisition suspended.

Independent audit launched.

Celeste placed on temporary leave pending investigation.

Rodrigo suspended.

Graham’s relationship terminated.

Wynn faced professional complaints and criminal scrutiny over the ticket possession and allegedly forged documents.

The conspiracy finally looked like it was collapsing.

Then Samuel received the lottery valuation.

If I took the lump sum after taxes, my actual take-home would be far less than eighty million.

Still enormous.

Mariana looked at me.

“I’m entitled to part of it, aren’t I?”

Honest question.

Not demand.

Samuel said:

“That depends on Virginia law, timing, marital property characterization, and divorce proceedings. We don’t guess.”

Good answer.

Then Mariana surprised me.

“I don’t want the ticket money.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because if I take any of it now, I’ll never know whether leaving you was my choice or theirs.”

May you like

For the first time, she sounded like the woman I married.

That didn’t mean I wanted her back.
